The Persistent World In Resident Evil Requiem Sounds Like A Dream If Done Right

More zombies for Leon to kill.

Story Highlights

  • Featuring dual protagonists, Resident Evil Requiem promises a shared, persistent world.
  • Limited resources with realistic progression and two different gameplay styles seem promising.
  • The freedom of approach and consequence-based world design can really boost replay value.

Ever since I played the OG Resident Evil 2, this titan of a series has been a dear part of my life. I’ve seen it at its peak, and I’ve lived through the lows. The camera angle maniulation, atmospheric horror, tension-building game design, intense encounters, action horror blend, and first-person immersion, all this has made the series what it is today. And now, it’s almost time to greet the 9th mainline entry, and I couldn’t be more excited to finally see Leon and Racoon city return after ages.

Capcom’s biggest franchise has tried to do something different in every game; some good stuff, some not so much. Resident Evil 6 didn’t do us any favors, and Village sort of strayed away from the brilliance of RE 7 for me. But Capcom is back to innovating with the dual-protagonist and joint progress system, which might be a whole lot more interesting than it seems at a glance. So go ahead, grab that sweet Resident Evil Requiem Steam key, and get ready to fawn over Leon kicking the hell out of some zombies once again.

A Grounded Sense Of Progress

I wanted to talk about the interesting implications of this concept ever since I heard the producer interview, and now I’ve finally got the chance. Resident Evil Requiem introduces a new protagonist, the “biggest scaredy-cat” (as per the devs) named Grace, but it also brings back the backflipping veteran Leon we adore. The game plans to create a dynamic gameplay experience that gives both an equal screentime, and molds the world in real-time to fit each character’s personality.

As expected, Leon’s sections will be the guns-blazing action of RE 4, while Grace will focus a lot more on atmospheric horror and restrictive gameplay. It seems like a pretty fun dynamic, but what’s more interesting is that both protagonists will share a joint, persistent world that evolves in real-time. Any action you take is permanent; it leaves a lasting mark on the game world, something you’ll see even when you switch characters. It aims to really drive it home that this is a reality-like simulation.

Any thing Grace does affects Leon’s world, and vice versa. If you ask me, this creates an amazing sense of immersion and progress. It makes the game a lot more alive and grounded. You have the freedom to approach the world as you wish, and every thing you do genuinely matters. Seeing a game world change in a realistic manner really puts things into perspective. It’s a pretty fascinating mechanic, and Capcom can do a lot of cool stuff with it.

I feel like this re9 is going to be the best one yet.

Resident Evil Requiem Can Really Boost Replayability

Above all, the shared progress and realistic world design can be very good for replayability. Resident Evil have traditionally been pretty short games, and so replay value is pretty much a key here. I’ve never had a problem doing a dozen playthroughs of RE 4 and not get bored, but the way things are going, it seems Resident Evil Requiem may be able to show it up. There’s nothing more interesting than finding new ways to influence a dynamically changing world.

Most replayable RE game? Ahead of requiem, I’m binging the Leon Kennedy titles– for me it’s the RE4 remake. Whats yours and why?

Requiem brings two distinct playstyles with its dual protagonists, and since the world changes permanently, you’re free to choose your approach. Grace will timidly avoid all the unspeakable horrors of Racoon City, barely scraping by with miniscule resources to keep the monsters and her own fears at bay, while Leon will just blast his way through all this fodder; he’s been through worse. Now the way you plan and execute every playthrough can be a thrill in itself. Since monsters and resources are one-time only, you get to decide who deals with it, and how.

You can challenge yourself by powering through Grace’s horror-inducing sections, killing abominations in a handicapped state. Alternatively, you can say “I’ll be back” as you escape every creature while playing as Grace, and then introduce them to Leon. The game design encourages you to be creative and strategic. In a world that evolves with your actions, all the different consequences are pretty fun to watch. Assuming it goes exactly like I hope it to be, Resident Evil Requiem might be one hell of a ride. February 27th can’t get here soon enough.
