Story Highlights
- Japanese physical PS5 copies of GTA 6 containing a download code reportedly list an expiration date just 170 days after the game’s launch date (November 19th, 2026).
- The deadline appears to affect code redemption, rather than access to the game after it has been successfully claimed.
- Rockstar stated that it’s due to regional regulations.
According to the Rockstar Support page, the digital download section shows an expiration date for the Japan region, which is 170 days after the game’s launch. That is an unusually short redemption window for what will almost certainly be one of the generation’s biggest releases.
GTA 6’s Japanese Download Codes Come With A Tight Deadline

Rockstar recently announced that GTA 6 will not have any physical copies, and the physical version available will only have a digital code inside it, meaning copies purchased after 170 days of launch will simply not work.
Still, it is a strange limitation. Sealed copies can remain on store shelves for months, while collectors may intentionally avoid opening a game immediately. Anyone buying old stock after the deadline could potentially find a useless code inside unless retailers, Sony, or Rockstar provide a replacement.
Why Does The Code Expire So Quickly?
According to Rockstar, their reasoning for it is “regional regulations in Japan”.
A physical box containing a time-sensitive digital key combines the drawbacks of both formats without offering the permanence normally associated with a disc. The drawbacks are being unable to install or download without an internet connection and limitations related to digital licensing.
For now, this appears to be a Japan-specific issue, and there is no indication that ordinary PlayStation Store purchases are affected. Rockstar may clarify the policy closer to release, but Japanese buyers should redeem boxed codes as soon as possible.
Considering authorities previously investigated and reportedly arrested a suspect linked to the GTA 6 hacking incident in London, an expiring retail code is hardly Rockstar’s biggest pre-launch crisis. For consumers spending full price, however, it is an unnecessary restriction that deserves a straightforward explanation.
