Story Highlights

  • Nintendo Switch 2 shipments reached 23.68 million units worldwide by June 30, 2026.
  • Its hardware sales exceeds that of Nintendo Switch during its initial adoption.
  • The original Nintendo Switch has now shipped 156.59 million units globally.

Nintendo Switch 2 has surpassed 23 million units worldwide, giving Nintendo another major hardware success barely a year into the console’s lifecycle.

The milestone also makes those early reports about Nintendo preparing Switch 2 production look remarkably well-founded in hindsight.

According to the FY27 report, Nintendo Switch 2 has sold 23.68 million units since launch, with 3.82 million units sold in the last quarter alone.

Even though Nintendo Switch 2 quarterly sales declined by 34.4% year-on-year, Nintendo is not worried about the state of the console, saying, “Although Nintendo Switch 2 sales volume declined compared to the same quarter when it launched last fiscal year, many consumers continued to adopt the system, encouraged by the release of new titles and other factors”.

That is an impressive start, especially considering the inevitable comparisons with the original Switch. Nintendo also stated that “Nintendo Switch 2 hardware sell-through exceeds that of Nintendo Switch during its initial adoption”. They also announced that Switch’s annual player base has reached 130 million.

Nintendo also highlighted the strong sales of Nintendo Switch 2 software in the same report.

The Original Switch Is Closing In On PS2

Nintendo’s financial report also reveals that the original Switch has now shipped 156.59 million units worldwide. It remains one of the best-selling consoles ever made and is still inching toward the PlayStation 2’s long-standing lifetime record, which is 160 million units.

For now, though, the numbers are encouraging. Switch 2 has moved beyond being merely a successful launch and is beginning to establish itself as Nintendo’s next major platform.
