Story Highlights
- Video games like Elden Ring, Red Dead Redemption 2, or Spider-Man 2 are titanic in popularity.
- Sometimes, huge releases like these end up overshadowing some of the smaller launches.
- Underrated gems such as Frostpunk and This War of Mine pack an incredible gameplay experience.
There is just no shortage of different types of video games out there in this sky-high business, but when it comes down to pick up your favorite game on a Friday night, your options always seem to revolve around two or three options. The problem with that is that you’re not diving into new, lesser-known experiences, and while there’s no issue with playing what you love, I believe you, as a gamer, should be expanding their horizons whenever the opportunity comes.
I’ve purposely ignored the following entries more times than I’d like to admit, but when I finally got around to trying them out, I was both happy and disappointed. The former because I found myself a great new title to play, and the latter because I wished I played them sooner. If you don’t want this to happen to you, read ahead.
These Hidden Gems Deserve A Lot More Love And Attention
Make sure to leave a comment down below if you think other suggestions could be made to the list in an attempt to enrich it even more.
1. Kingdom Come: Deliverance
If there’s one game that I will admit to ignoring for far too long and then ending up regretting it horribly, it’s Kingdom Come: Deliverance. A cruel, often brutal first-person RPG experience that follows no linear pathway or anything of the sort. Just you, your creative potential, and the choices that you’re willing to make as you march on your journey.
It also happens to be one of those unique titles that make you feel trivial compared to the scale that they’re set on. Besides, a sequel seems to be coming as well, so make sure you catch up on this unique action-adventure before taking on the next iteration in the franchise.

2. Subnautica
I happen to suffer from a fear called Thalassophobia, something that prevents me from going on swims or getting too close to my town’s beach. That’s why when I saw Subnautica shooting up in popularity, I kind of just neglected it right off the bat. Never did I realize how wrong was I when I thought that way, for what is otherwise here one gem of a game with a much deeper lore than I had initially thought of.
And not just that, talk about beautiful visuals, Subnautica’s riveting curiosity-focused gameplay, and overall freedom that the title brings to the table. Oh, and since the game openly discourages fast travel, you’ll have a great time exploring the deep seas.

3. This War Of Mine
Moving forward, we’ve got an exceptional colony sim whose whole idea and overall concept comes across as a lot more involved than what meets the eye initially. This War of Mine showcases war from the perspective of a commoner in an honest attempt to cast a lens into what really happens in the time of destructive warfare.
A game like this can genuinely alter your mindset, with nothing but simple gameplay and moderate visuals at best. I highly recommend that you check it out, and perhaps, get back to me and share your experience.
- Get it on Steam.
4. Marvel: Midnight Suns
Civilization developer Firaxis Games has gone ahead and pulled a wild one with Marvel’s Midnight Suns, formulating a tactical RPG so good, it puts its counterparts to shame. The game surprisingly features an overwhelming cast of characters from Marvel Comics, not to mention its breathtaking soundtrack that literally sends chills down your spine everytime you fire up the RPG.
eXputer reviewed Midnight Suns, giving it a 3.5/5.0 overall rating and commending that it “blends the tactical RPG aspect with the deckbuilding mechanics, and that makes for a really fun experience overall.”
- Get it on Steam.
5. The Mass Effect Trilogy
All right, I will admit that the Mass Effect franchise by BioWare is a lot more known than some of the other games I’ve talked about in the listicle, but if you’re someone who still hasn’t tried it out, I suggest you drop everything and get to it sharpish. Thanks to its sensational storyline, terrific choice-based gameplay, satisfying exploration, and tight gunplay, Mass Effect is still the best Western RPG trilogy.
- Get it on Steam.
6. Frostpunk
11 Bit Studios has a knack for creating genre-defining titles, and with games like This War of Mine and Frostpunk, there’s really no room for doubt in there. Frostpunk is survival strategy at its core, with a strong focus on player agency. Getting to learn the game is tough as is, but getting yourself to stop is where the real difficulty is at. Don’t sleep on this one like I did, period.
