Deep Rock Galactic Drills Deeper With Its Newest Season

After waiting a whole year was it worth it?

Story Highlights

  • Deep Rock Galactic is a co-op shooter made by Ghost Ship Games, that just released its 5th season.
  • It has been at least a year since a major update, yet the new content is worth the wait.
  • The new Battle Pass system takes a page from Halo Infinite and improves on it.

Deep Rock Galactic is a Left 4 Dead-inspired 4-player co-op shooter with procedural level generation and mining. This game is the most fun I’ve ever had when it came to coop shooters, and I’m not the only one who thinks that the game has shot in popularity since its release in 2018.

Ghost Ship Games outdid themselves with Deep Rock Galactic. Whether, it’s shooting bugs, getting drunk with friends, or being a general nuisance to management, there’s never a dull moment on Hoxxes IV.

After waiting a whole year after the release of the generally unenthusiastic 4th season (not that it was bad, but rather it lacked that wow factor that attracted many to the game), the 5th season; “Drilling Deeper” has been released. After just watching the release trailer I’m hyped, so let’s get right into what we can expect from this season.

New Mission, Harder Difficulties & Drippier Dwarves

The biggest add-on for this season is the new “Deep Scan Mission” where you dig into a dazzling geode, only to rob it of its precious seeds. That isn’t what’s exhilarating, but rather how you get into the geode, by utilizing the new “Drillevator”.  It’s a drill and an elevator, truly a highlight of the dev’s creative minds. Jokes aside, it gets hectic as the Drillevator needs constant repairs as it descends.

If that’s too easy for you, might I suggest trying this mission or any other on the new Hazard 5+ difficulty? The devs have added adjustable difficulty modifiers in the game’s already hardest difficulty, including; enemy aggressiveness, numbers, toughness, and player vulnerability, for a bigger reward & bragging rights.

All new Cosmetics for Season 5

After a long day’s work comes some well-deserved rest & relaxation, so, grab a drink from the bar, dance the night away with friends, and spend those credits on some brand-spanking new cosmetics. New skin tones, hats, and other cosmetics that suit your dwarven preferences.

What Halo Infinite Did But Better

Leveling up the Battle Pass is a nightmare

One of the best things I like about this game is the lack of any predatory monetization in it. The only things you pay for are the game itself, and optional cosmetic packs that are there solely to support the devs. That’s why you can color me surprised when I learned that the devs implemented the Battle Pass system from Halo Infinite, but better.

Not only can you choose to go back to any pre-existing season’s Battle Pass, but you can go back to that season entirely, so you can experience what you missed out on. Also, unlike Infinite’s Battle Pass, you’re not bound to earning levels solely by completing weird and specific “challenges.” Deep Rock Galactic also has a separate cosmetic tree tied to the battle pass. To add insult to injury, all of this is free: past, present & future.

Was It Worth The Wait?

Season 5 is going to be awesome

Apart from some quality-of-life changes, new overclocks for weapons, enemies, anomalies in the cave systems, and a tidier space station, that’s about it with this season. At first glance, this may seem like less content after a long dry spell, however, keep in mind the dev team is small but ambitious. Also, they keep their promises, unlike certain other companies *cough* *cough* Blizzard *cough*.

This game’s endearing charm, goofy characters, and casual atmosphere remind me of Team Fortress 2. Man, I miss that game.

So what do I personally think of this season? I believe this is the best season of Deep Rock Galactic yet! The game feels fresher and more modern, in more ways than one. This is the best time for new players to introduce themselves to the game.

But remember:

If you don’t Rock and Stone, you ain’t comin’ home!”

-Javier O’Neill (voice actor for the dwarves)
