Story Highlights
- The cutscenes used to have an impact on the narrative and, hence, the player.
- The newer content shown does not dive deep into the storyline.
- The voice acting has become a disappointment for many of the fans.
If you’re reading this, then you probably have played some of the old-school Assassin’s Creed games. The games used to have great narrative and storytelling. This narrative was further pushed to the top with epic cinematic trailers. It’s a great piece of voice acting and an amazing voyage of cutscenes.
You can take Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, for example. This game created so much hype just by its cinematic trailer. Watching Ezio Auditore kill templars with his assassin friends and ganging up on the main villain in a trailer gave us all gamers an epic peek into the upcoming game where teamwork would be a great mechanic. It was as much fun as all these elements were in the past titles.
The newer titles seem to have less polished cutscenes with more emphasis on the open-world mechanics and the gameplay rather than appealing to fans toward the greatness of the title as a whole. Let’s talk about it in detail.
The Oldschool Thrill Is Gone Now
As aforementioned, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood stood out for its jawbreaking cinematic trailer. However, the trailer itself is not everything. The game includes various intricately crafted cutscenes that add depth to the narrative.
For example when Ezio sacrifices his ring finger to solidify himself as a member of the assassin brotherhood. When I saw this cutscene for the first time, I was in a state of awe as it hyped me a lot, finally seeing Ezio being a part of the Assassin Brotherhood after one whole game.
The NPCs in the game also have great voice acting, like Leonardo Da Vinci’s comedic lines that added a layer of lightheartedness to the game. All these elements combined provided me with an experience that is unforgettable and lives in my heart to this day.
The Lack Of Effort In Newer Titles
Now that we have talked about the older games. Let us dive deep into the structure of the new titles. The latest Assassin’s Creed games do have cutscenes and cinematic trailers, but they seem lifeless. The cinematic trailer for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, for example, showed us the open-world design of the game and the brutal combat it consisted of.
This makes the game less appealing since having no idea about the lore or what your role is in the game precisely leaves the player in a state of confusion about whether to go for this title or not. I still believe from the bottom of my heart that the Assassin’s Creed series as a whole can redeem itself, as the cutscenes and cinematics of the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows look promising.
From Great Dialogues To Poor Voice Acting
Talking about the voice acting and the dialogue content of the game, I can confidently state that the older titles were filled with rich lines and impact on the narrative. Firstly, the game had historical figures and characters with full-depth personalities, making each character individually unique.
Ezio, for example, was portrayed as a Yankee in Assassin’s Creed 2, and how his tone and demeanor changed throughout the game really showed us the development of his character. His persona changed from a brat to a responsible and serious adult, with wisdom slowly accumulating throughout the game.

In recent games, the protagonist’s role has actually been dependent on the player. By this, I mean you control the decisions shaping and molding the main character through your own means. This might not necessarily be a bad feature, but it leaves an empty hole in shaping the personality of the protagonist, as the aspect of originality is missing.
I hope Ubisoft acts on it for their upcoming latest title and gives us fans the original Assassin’s Creed experience we always loved and enjoyed.
