Here’s Why God Of War Heading To Egypt Next Might Be A Solid Decision

Don't hold your breath just yet though.

Story Highlights

  • God of War is one of the biggest PlayStation franchises to ever have graced modern-day video gaming platforms.
  • As per a new rumor, the next God of War could employ Egyptian mythology as its setting, with Kratos as the main protagonist.
  • This isn’t the first time we’re hearing about God of War Egypt. Rumors have been strong on the prospect since day one.

If there’s any action-adventure game franchise out there that’s put the competition to its paces and established as one of the most premiere PlayStation game series, I don’t think you need to stray too far to put your finger on the icon that God of War is.

Tracing its humble origins back to 2005 on the PlayStation 2, Santa Monica Studio’s flagship IP has observed nothing but growth in the following years, right to the point where Kratos is now one of the most well-known video game characters in the business, and rightfully so. If you’re a fan of the franchise and are eagerly anticipating the arrival of the next God of War title after the 2022-released God of War Ragnarok, I’ve got some news for you.

Daniel Richtman, a known industry insider with a 50-50 track record, has recently taken to their Patreon channel to reveal what they know about the next God of War title, which is currently in the making. As per Richtman, Middle Eastern casting for an unspecified AAA title is underway, which hints at God of War Egypt.

Sony is casting Middle Eastern actors for an unknown AAA game, which is likely to be the next God of War that explores Egyptian mythology.”

While I realize that this isn’t really concrete proof of said game existing or being in the works, you can’t help but look into the potential of the prospect here. Not only does it seem the most logical next step for the God of War franchise, but certain instances have already hinted at this coming true in the past. I’ll dig into those a bit later on in the article, but first, let’s delve into why God of War Egypt could be the next big thing.

The Egyptian Mythology Can Accommodate The Next God Of War Nicely

If anything else, us gaming folks love seeing a challenge unfold, and what better way for that to come to fruition than Kratos going toe to toe against Egyptian deities?

While it’s been confirmed that the most powerful of the gods across all mythologies are Greek ones, it’s assumed that Egyptian gods are at least more potent than their Norse counterparts, whom Kratos overcame in God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok, but not with ease, so to speak.

For starters, there are some Egyptian gods that have gained notoriety for either their ruthlessness or sheer strength and power, including Anubis and Sekhmet. Watching Kratos go up against the likes of these is surely going to take us on another wild adventure as we witness another chapter unfold in the God of War saga, and what better place for all this to happen than Egypt next?

I mean, the culture’s rich as is, and if history has taught us anything, it’s that there are many ways to twist a story, and I’m sure that’s what Santa Monica could plan on executing if everything else is set in motion.

The potential on display here is massive. I easily see the father-son duo sifting through the famous Egyptian pyramids, with danger lurking just around every corner. Oh, Good God, this is going to be beyond exciting—I can already tell.

How Strong Is The God Of War Egypt Rumor?

Now, here’s the kicker: To talk about the latest rumor pushed out by Daniel Richtman, I would advise you not to hold your breath just yet. The insider in question has a fairly reliable track record when it comes to entertainment television and movies, but in the domain of gaming, our anonymous source has been fairly hit-and-miss.

First off, there’s that Bloodborne remaster rumor that keeps roaming around non-stop, dispersed by none other than Daniel himself. Then, there’s also this bit that talks about Sony working on a Bloodborne movie. None of these two claims have come to fruition, not yet at least, though I hope they do.

It bears mentioning here that despite insider tip-offs and everything of the sort, the concept of God of War heading to Egypt is not unheard of from an official standpoint. The God of War Fallen God comic issue, particularly, covers the protagonist journeying across Greece and Egypt to make landfall in Scandinavia.

And if you give the Raising Kratos documentary a full watch, you’ll discover that Cory Barlog, the Santa Monica frontman, confirmed that the team thought cautiously about basing the 2018-released God of War in Egypt right from the get-go.

Moreover, half the team decided to go with the Egyptian setting, but the deciding vote went to Cory. The Norse setting was finalized, and the rest is history. From that point on, you can tell how this could easily be the next major step in the God of War franchise, and without reservations.

The concept of Egypt is something that many have already realized within the team, so it’s unlikely that the next mainline God of War title will be set in a different region.

I just hope that whatever direction Santa Monica decides to go, the studio does not end up shaking up the formula so much for the second time, that the entire project ends up falling flat on its face. That would unequivocally mark a dark day for the franchise because it’s hard to capture lightning twice in a bottle like how the developer did with the 2018 reboot of the series.

The Current State Of The Franchise And Future Reservations

If anything, this rumor is a breath of fresh air, and just the type of reassurance many of us needed, given what’s been speculated as of late for God of War.

  • Note: Spoilers pertaining to God of War Ragnarok await ahead.

Rumor had it that Santa Monica had been working toward an Atreus spin-off set in the God of War universe, and it seemed pretty believable too at the time. Think about it—Kratos’ son ventured off into the nine realms to pursue his “calling” at the end of God of War Ragnarok. Although this separated the father-son duo at the time, it only hinted at a temporary detachment

The only problem is, no one wants to play as Atreus, and this is painfully correct for God of War Ragnarok. All of his sections reek of boredom, and you just couldn’t wait to get back into the boots of good, ‘ol Kratos. That’s why such prospects were automatically met with disapproval, so the fan base is glad Santa Monica didn’t go that route, not yet at least.

Instead, we got the gift that is God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla, which earned a 5/5 rating in eXputer’s review, with author Usama Mehmood remarking,

On top of it being a free update, God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla is a love letter to all the old fans of this incredible series.”

Here’s something else to take into account, however. Sony had a live service God of War, I repeat, live service, title in the works via Bluepoint Games over the course of the past year or so. It’s painful to hear that such a project was ever greenlit, considering the legacy of the God of War franchise and the impact it’s made in the action-adventure space.

The good news is, Sony decided to put an end to it — as per a report by Bloomberg — but there’s uncertainty still in the air as to what the series’ future holds. Whatever it is, I’m just praying none of it falls into the live service department.

Finally, before we get God of War Egypt, you may as well prepare for something fresher from Santa Monica. It’s been heavily rumored — at least more than a couple of times — that a remastered version of the original three God of War titles is coming. Honestly, I’d rather we get a new game instead of a newer coat of paint on the older games, but hey, that’s just me.
