What’s more, there’s a lot of meaningful stuff you can learn from games these days, too. And when I talk about learning from games, I believe the domain of marketing becomes particularly relevant.
We all know how challenging it can be to come up with new marketing strategies and tactics to keep up with people’s ever-changing interests. Surprisingly, GTA Online’s virtual streets are one of the best ways to engage people today. That’s right, our beloved Grand Theft Auto, which has provided us with countless hours of entertainment, is also a good source of life lessons. How, you ask? Let me elaborate.

Before I begin, I think it’s important to say that it’s all about perspective. Two people could be looking at the same thing, but they could be inferring the exact opposite. Businesses in the game, like nightclubs, bunkers, and arcades, make money independently, but players have to log in to get it or keep the supply chains going. As per my understanding, this can be translated into real-life marketing in the form of daily rewards, streak bonuses, weekly milestones for consistent login, or some email series that provides deals over time.

Similarly, you want people to feel a certain class and sense of luxury when they join your service. Anyone who has played GTA Online knows that status is more important than numbers. Players don’t just want money; they want the lifestyle, like owning a high-rise penthouse or flying a gold-plated helicopter. GTA boasts a certain sense of lavishness, and the same goes for well-known savvy marketers.
Apple doesn’t just sell smartphones; it sells status and ease of use. Red Bull doesn’t sell a drink; it sells an adventure. You can put your own spin on it by giving off special rewards based on a user’s longevity, creating badges to show off, and various membership tiers. But at the end, it’s not so much about giving more as it is about framing rewards as things to strive for.
The “Passive” In Passive Income Shouldn’t Mean Boring

It gives people the illusion of progress, even if it’s just your app, website, or service. The key is to create milestones that people believe they have earned, rather than simply received. And once this “build up” is complete, should you stop? Not at all. Now comes the test of your skills to retain your users.

In GTA Online, players hire workers, manage risk, and improve their assets to make the most money. If they don’t, their club will be empty and done for. For marketers, passive income streams like affiliate marketing, subscriptions, or productized services all need the same kind of touch. Updating your creative work often, getting back in touch with your affiliate community, and small but essential features regularly, go a long way towards longevity.
