Story Highlights
- The game is the most underrated in the series, and people fail to understand it.
- Twilight Princess added realism in fidelity for the first time in the Zelda series.
- It deserves a remake on Switch 2 so people can see its greatness.
The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess is the thirteenth installment in the main Zelda series; it was first released in 2005 on the Gamecube. It instantly gained many fans and players, and the game was ported to the Nintendo Wii in 2006. It is an action-adventure Zelda game like all before and after, but it has some crucial elements that make it stand out from the rest of the crowd.
The game allowed Link, the main character, to transform into a wolf in various sections of the game. For me, playing it for the first time was an experience of playing the game with two protagonists, with one being the sword-wielding green tunic Link and a wild, ferocious wolf with heightened senses.
Upon its release, the game was perceived both ways as it introduced realistic graphics comparable to Dark Souls 1 at that time; this was either an excellent innovation for some veterans or a letdown for others. Hence, the mixed reviews make the game very underrated. The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess is the most underrated Zelda game ever, and it needs a remake on the Switch 2. Here is why.
The Dark And Eerie Atmosphere Of The Game
The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess had an atmospheric environment unlike any in the Zelda series. It introduced mature themes and a darker environment, dwelling on light vs. darkness.
The game introduced a realistic art style, making it more immersive and resonating with the players. On the other hand, there was this light world, which was opposite in contrast to the eerie tone of the game, giving the players a switch-up of pace and a breather from whatever world they played in.
A Storyline Which Deviates From The Cliche
Twilight Princess has a rich narrative that is not your go for saving Princess Zelda from Ganon and becoming the hero of Hyrule. Instead, it was layered with multiple narratives and intriguing antagonists like Zant. Midna, the companion in every Zelda game, was also powerfully written. She is not your everyday fairy but a partner who has excellent dialogue and adds great depth to the story.
The presence of Midna is one of the most beloved characters in the whole Zelda franchise as she has a solid backstory, and her relationship with Link has shaped the story of the game profoundly.
The Complexities Of The Dungeons And Puzzles
The game has ten beautiful intricate dungeons, considered some of the best in the entire series. Let’s look at Snowpeak Ruins in the Snowpeak Mountain Range area. The usual pattern of a dungeon in the Zelda series is that the player gets an item and is required to solve the puzzle through that specific item.
This dungeon, however, differs from the ordinary as it requires Link to collect multiple ingredients from the region or area and craft a soup. Yes, you heard that right, it was soup. This puzzle was a breathtaking experience as it broke the concept of puzzle solving in the series and gave me a new perspective on how complex mazes can be built without following the simple original method.
The Combat System And Boss Fights Of Twilight Princess
The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess provides you with a vast range of tools in your arsenal. The standard combat of Link swinging his Master Sword still exists, but it has added depth with multiple abilities like Helm Splitter and the Mortal Draw.
The game also uses ranged combat excellently, as you can use different weapons like the Bow and Arrow, the Slingshot, or the superior Clawshot. This adds a layer of new opportunities to deal with enemies as you can hit and attack the enemy from the range and pull them towards the player so you can quickly switch to close combat and finish them off with your sword.
Another addition to the already fantastic combat system was to turn into a wolf and change the gameplay completely, opening new strategies to engage with the danger ahead. With the wolf abilities, Link can quickly attack the enemy, biting them and ripping their skin and health bar apart.
There is also this ability of the wolf Link to attack multiple enemies at once. With the help of Midna, she can open up an energy field, letting the beast form of Link go wild and allowing the player to control the crowd.
Last but not least, the combat mechanic is the horseback combat system. The player can use swords and arrows while riding Epona, allowing the game to open up different ways to engage the enemies attacking Link. Overall, the combat system introduced in Twilight Princess was so complete of variations that it made the experience super immersive and fun for me and the whole world.
Switch 2 And High Expectations For The Remake
With the rumored specs of the Nintendo Switch 2, the graphical and performance upgrade can potentially utilize Nvidia’s Ampere architecture. In other words, the performance would be similar to that of the Playstation 4 Pro. Considering this, a remake of the game would be perfect, given its already remarkable visual fidelity. Now imagine playing this game in 60 frames per second with high resolution.
