All You're Missing Is An Eyepatch

Over the years, Minecraft developers have steadily introduced a number of different animals into their monumentally popular game. Another animal that many players might not even know is tamable is the Parrot. So with this how to tame a Parrot in Minecraft guide, we’ll show you exactly how to find and get one of these birds for yourself.

Key Highlights
  • Parrots are an uncommon mob spawning only in the jungle biome in various color gradients.
  • These parrots can be primarily tamed with edible crop seeds like wheat and pumpkin which you can extensively grow on your farms.
  • Once tamed, a mini-HP bar can be seen atop these parrots as they calmly perch onto your shoulder as you would see with a pirate.
  • They can pull off several tricks, like dancing next to a music box and even imitating mob sounds.
  • However, parrots can become untamed and fly away upon being scared by the player taking damage or the player’s death.

A Blue Parrot.

The Parrot is an extremely elusive mob that only spawns within the Jungle biomes of a world. If you’re lucky, you might find one of these near your base, or you might have to go out exploring for hours on end to find one. As a hint, be on the lookout for dense trees and a large number of vines. That’s how you know that a Jungle is nearby.

Once you make it, there is a 0.2% chance that a Parrot will spawn for you on either grass, leaf, or log block. You have to look up high near the treetops. It is not easy to find one of these birds, so expect to devote hours searching for your target. But after you do eventually find one, approach it carefully, or it might fly off.

Now, this is the point where you should know how to tame a Parrot in Minecraft.

The Taming Process

Wheat Seeds.

Like a lot of non-hostile mobs in Minecraft, feeding a specific type of item to the animal will allow you to tame it for yourself. In the case of Parrots, this happens to seed. There are four different items that fit this category:

  • Beetroot Seeds.
  • Melon Seeds.
  • Pumpkin Seeds.
  • Wheat Seeds.

For the sake of convenience, we suggest that you go with Wheat Seeds. These are the most common items on the list since you can get them by punching grass. If you have a Redstone automated Wheat farm, then that will also yield a lot of seeds. Feeding these to a Parrot has a 33.3% chance to tame it. Keep at least 20 units with you so that you don’t run out.

  • Drowning.
  • Falling off a high ledge.
  • Sleeping on a bed.
  • Taking damage.
  • Walking into lava.
  • Walking into the water of any height.
