In a new interview, Avowed director Carrie Patel stated that devs are actively working to improve the game’s combat following feedback from fans. While talking to YouTuber itmeJP, the director revealed that Obsidian refining the sense of hitting and impact in the RPG and that the team already knows this aspect of the title needs work. Patel expanded on this further at the 2:21:00 mark in the video:
While addressing feedback, the Avowed director also mentioned that it’s heartening to see fans call out this stuff which the studio is already working on. Carrie Patel explained that the devs were way behind on fully realizing their vision of combat with enemies when the trailer came out last month, saying that’s just the nature of the business and how trailers are put together.
One of the heartening things [about Avowed feedback] has been seeing fans call out some of the things that we are actively working on and know about like the sense of hitting & impact in combat as you’re attacking enemies. It’s like what y’all saw was a few weeks behind when that footage was released but the team’s been working on it. We know it, trust us, we’re on it.”
First announced way back in July 2020, Avowed is the first exclusive AAA Xbox title from Obsidian since Microsoft bought it in 2018. Initially pitched as the studio’s version of The Elder Scrolls: V, Carrie Patel switched the focus to depth instead of scope later on in the production to follow the blueprint of previous Obsidian RPGs with a higher emphasis on characters and story.
Avowed is set to release on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC in the fall 2024 and is set in the Pillars of Eternity universe.
