Dead Space Remake’s Accessibility Features Detailed; Sports Colorblind Mode And More

The hyped remake is ensuring to target a wider, and even disabled audience.

Story Highlights

  • Dead Space Remake will feature a plethora of accessibility options and player choices, even meeting the needs of minor disabled users.
  • The options include a Colorblind Mode, control and subtitle customization, extensive button mapping, the “friction” feature to slow down camera movement when the target laser is nearer to an enemy and much more.
  • The developers have also included explicit content warnings to warn players before specific scenes or even disable the scenes by blurring them.
  • Each accessibility option can be selected depending on the player’s needs, and all options are disabled by default.

As recently announced by Electronic Arts, the upcoming Dead Space Remake is bringing various accessibility features to appease all kinds of players. For instance, even players with a minor disability like colorblindness will benefit from innovative player choices in the settings.

The accessibility features contain a colorblind mode, which will provide the ability to adjust “Preset color adjustments support Protanopia (Red Weak), Deuteranopia (Green Weak), and Tritanopia (Blue Weak), and color contrast levels.” There is also a menu narration option to narrate menus in selectable volumes.

Dead Space Remake also emphasizes control customization deeply, featuring the ability to remap every input to a new button.

A single button can be used to complete quick-time events; “switch the Sprint, Aim, and map zoom controls to toggle mode; and change the command to close audio and video logs to a tap rather than having to hold down the button.”

The “friction” feature in the aim assistance options will let players slow down camera movement when the target laser is closer to an enemy. The time can be changed alongside the ability to turn off the option entirely.

The subtitles are included with heavy customization options; for instance, the font size, all-caps size, color inversion of text and background, and more can be changed. The floating effect in the menu section and the camera shake feature can also be turned off.

That is not all; Dead Space Remake also features content warning options, including playing a warning before every crucial horror scene for sensitive players. Even the gory content can be hidden if the player desires. It is worth noting that all the accessibility options, including content warnings, are disabled by default.

The first option will warn you of a potentially disturbing scene ahead of time by displaying a non-intrusive popup that gives a brief description of the type of event that’s waiting around the corner, or in an audio or video log before you play it. The other option will actually hide the upcoming scene behind a screen effect. You’ll still hear any audio, but a blurring effect will hide the visuals until the scene has played out,” notes Christian, the lead designer.

The developers have ensured to concentrate on customization options for all types of players. The game will hold your hand in different aspects and help you survive the horror experience, or it will drop you in without help, depending on your playing style.

Dead Space Remake lead senior experience designer Christian Cimon talks about the player choices.

But the game came out 15 years ago, when accessibility features were less common. Things like subtitles, menu narration, control-remapping, and the like are pretty much expected now, so we wanted to make sure the remake aligns with today’s highest standards.”

Dead Space Remake is slating closer to a release and includes a secret alternative ending, but it is only available if a specific condition is met. The game already appears to be receiving fantastic scores on Metacritic after its review embargo was lifted.

With its anticipated release Tomorrow, January 27th, users have been curious about the game’s accessibility options, and EA Motive has worked hard on broadening its target audience. The studio has explained its range of options, ensuring players can manually choose the best settings to have an appalling horror experience.
