  • The information originates from the PlayStation Game Size X account.
  • According to the tweet, pre-load for the game will go live around midnight on February 27.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth reportedly has a staggering download size of nearly 150 GB. The information originates from X (formerly known as Twitter) account @PlayStation Game Size, stating that the game will require 145.25 GB of storage. This adds another name to the growing list of titles requiring massive amounts of hard drive space, reigniting concerns about optimization and data compression in the gaming industry.

In recent memory, titles like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2023 have already significantly contributed to this, with the former requiring 240 GB on the PS5. Some players are shocked at the seemingly infinite rise of storage requirements with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth as it not only hints at constant purchases but also poses challenges for those who don’t have access to high-speed internet.

While it’s poised to offer an expansive & visually stunning experience, FF7: Rebirth will likely make players choose between uninstalling titles or upgrading their storage banks once more. Another aspect of this issue is internet speeds as they stagnate in many regions thus making it a challenge to download these games. Furthermore, larger file sizes are mostly limited to multiplayer games as they receive updates over a larger lifespan in comparison to single-player offerings.

Optimization and data compression play a crucial role in mitigating this issue. CD Projekt Red, with Cyberpunk 2077‘s recent next-gen update, demonstrates how significant file size reductions are possible without any tradeoff in visual quality and other factors. Balancing ambition with efficiency should be a priority for studios while keeping such consumer interests in mind.

While some may argue that larger storage capacities are becoming more commonplace, it’s crucial to address the inclusivity aspect. Not everyone has access to cutting-edge hardware or high-speed internet. Excluding these players creates an unnecessary barrier while also raising concerns about how companies are allocating resources and utilizing budgets.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will feature the return of fan-favorite Vincent Valentine, voiced by Matt Mercer. It’s set to launch on February 29, 2024, as a timed exclusive for the PlayStation 5.
