Story Highlights
- Tomb Raider I-III Remastered is a re-release of the first three Tomb Raider games by Crystal Dynamics.
- The remaster features a content warning upon starting the game warning players of offensive content.
- A mod that removes said content warning has been banned from Nexus Mods.
While the recently released Tomb Raider I-III Remastered is an exceptional re-release featuring one of gaming’s most iconic characters, a group of fans levied criticism against a content warning in the remaster. The warning in particular tells players that parts of the game may be outdated and offensive but have been preserved in full for preservation’s sake.
A mod was promptly available on Nexus Mods, which removed the content warning at the start of the game, citing the warning as “misinformative.” The mod has since been removed by Nexus Mods with comments – according to Reddit – that were “extremely angry” at the mod.
The description of the mod reads as follows:
This mod removes Crystal Dynamics’ incorrect message about the game supposedly being offensive. If you felt offended by that warning, this mod is for you. Nothing complicated, it’s just text in the COMMON.TXT file. Write your own message there and leave some words of wisdom for Crystal Dynamics!“
It has to be noted that there is already a way to remove the content warning from the game without utilizing a mod. All players need to do is add a specific command to the launch settings.
Since the removal, Nexus Mods has faced backlash from the community, with some citing favoritism in the moderation process, though this isn’t the first time a mod site has found itself in the crosshairs for removing a mod. Last year during Pride month, Nexus Mods removed a mod that disabled pride flags in Spider-Man Remastered on PC.
Also a few days ago, another mod website called “GameBanana” removed a mod for Persona 3 Reload that “altered” the design of a certain character.
Tomb Raider itself seems to be having a great time with not only a fantastic remaster but a new game also on the way. Only a few days ago, Crystal Dynamics showed off Lara Croft’s new redesign, which is heavily inspired by her classic design in the original Tomb Raider titles.
