Resident Evil 4 Remake Mod Replaces Leon With CJ In The Demo

Talk about this substitute.

Story Highlights

  • A new mod for the Resident Evil 4 remake’s demo allows players to use CJ instead of Leon.
  • Besides the voice, the mod incorporates CJ pretty well in the remake.
  • You have to buy creator Marcos RC’s Patreon subscription to obtain the mod.

You can play as Carl Johnson, one of gaming’s most popular characters, in the Resident Evil 4 remake. A new mod by 3D artist Marcos RC replaces Leon’s character model with CJ’s. He created this mod for Resident Evil 4’s main character in the game’s demo. The GTA San Andreas protagonist’s animations remain the same as Leon’s in this mod though.

In addition, the voice of Leon is retained in this mod and CJ speaks like our favorite US government agent. But, the facial expressions resemble the Grand Theft Auto idol. The mod is remarkable and besides the audio, you completely feel like you are controlling CJ and not Leon. Marcos RC also posted a video about this Resident Evil 4 mod on his YouTube channel and you can check it out below.

You will have to spend some money to use this mod as it isn’t free. It is available on the creator’s Patreon and you’ll have to pay $5 per month to access this mod. He has several Patreon tiers, but the most popular one is the one concerning Resident Evil and it contains this mod. Therefore, you can play as CJ in the remake by subscribing to his Patreon.

When we talk about horror video games, Resident Evil automatically comes up in the conversation. We all know how the series is responsible for popularising the horror genre in gaming. But, it has also introduced new variations in the medium and created subgenres. One of the franchise’s titles responsible for such innovations is 2005’s Resident Evil 4.

The Capcom game familiarized the average gamer with the “action-horror” side of the genre. It took a more action-oriented approach, which was a success considering it sold 11 million copies and is considered one of the best games in the series. Resident Evil 4 created a whole new subgenre of horror games by introducing action-heavy horror gameplay. Titles like Dead Space, The Last of Us, and F.E.A.R. are just some of the brilliant action-horror games that came after Capcom’s variation.

Resident Evil proceeded with the combination of horror and shooter elements and created an even bigger commercial success. Resident Evil 5 sold 13.4 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling game in the series. But, it all went downhill with Resident Evil 6 as the developers focused too much on being like Call of Duty rather than a horror experience. Even though the game did well and sold 11.6 million worldwide, the critical and fan reception was less welcoming.

As a result, Capcom went back to the drawing board and reverted back to the survival-horror approach of the first games with Resident Evil 7. It was a big success, but no one can deny the impact the franchise’s creative turn to action-horror had. Resident Evil 4 hanged the outlook of the horror genre and that’s why the game deserves this remake. New gameplay innovations are a part of this 2023 remake such as a new parry system and no quick-time events.

It will also expand relationships between characters, have better individual characterization, and make the story more horror focused. Capcom released a demo for Resident Evil 4’s remake on March 9, which is the basis for this CJ mod. You can play it on all platforms or wait until the game releases on March 24, 2023. It will be available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC.
