The Saints Row Reboot Reportedly Sold About 1.7 Million Copies

The game has also gone free-to-play once on Epic Games.

Story Highlights

  • The Saints Row franchise by THQ and now Deep Silver is a series of open-world games.
  • The latest iteration in the franchise, Saints Row (2022) has sold about 1.7 million copies.
  • The game, despite much anticipation, failed to meet the expectations of the publisher as well.

The Saints Row reboot, released in 2022 by Volition for modern-day gaming platforms, couldn’t really hit it off with players and critics around the world, being unable to meet the anticipations of its publisher, Deep Silver. As per the LinkedIn profile of Volition’s former Community and Social Media Manager, (thanks Timur222) the game went on to sell somewhere around 1.7 million copies in its lifetime.

Partnered with publisher to ensure the successful launch and lifecycle support of Saints Row (2022), a AAA game that attracted over 1 million players and sold 1.7 million units. Advised the studio’s strategies in community engagement, social media marketing, digital outreach, and public relations,” reads the profile’s description.

Back in February last year — and this really puts things into perspective — it was reported that the Saints Row reboot cost somewhere around 100 million USD to make. Before that, though, an Embracer Group representative spoke up, confirming that the game needs to sell around 2 million copies to just break even. It seems the chaotic action-adventure is shy of a couple of hundred thousand units to meet that target.

Embracer has been fairly upfront regarding Saints Row (2022), claiming back in November 2022, that the title couldn’t garner the type of attention it was expecting following the game’s release, saying

The reception of Saints Row did not meet the full expectations and left the fanbase partially polarized. The game development studio, Volition, has been working hard to improve the player experience,” says Embracer.

Volition released it on August 23, 2022, for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. eXputer rated the game 2/5 in its review, highlighting its extremely repetitive gameplay, awful writing, emotionless world, and bad AI that makes you feel weird playing through Saints Row.
