Story Highlights
- Star Citizen, Cloud Imperium Games’ sci-fi space RPG, has been in development for PC for more than 10 years.
- As spotted on RSI’s funding page, the game has crossed the $750,000 mark, nearing close to a billion.
- It bears noticing that Star Citizen’s development still hasn’t finished, and is currently lacking many fundamentals.
Star Citizen is inarguably one of the biggest buzzwords in the realm of video game controversy, having been in development for as long as one can remember. What started out with a Kickstarter campaign has now ended up garnering more than $750,000 in 2024. To think that Cloud Imperium has spent way more than a decade working on the title and still not coming through after all this time has backers concerned about the future of the IP.
Alongside Star Citizen, Cloud Imperium Games is also working on Squadron 42, another space-based first-person shooter, and a standalone campaign of CIG’s space MMO that’s currently in pre-alpha stage presumably. I reckon it’ll be at least 2030 before this game comes out in beta access of some sort.
Star Citizen Continues To Spark Controversy With No Release Date In Sight
Credit where it’s due, Star Citizen gets certain things right, and the way it does that, I don’t think anybody else out there is also doing the same thing. For starters, it’s incredibly immersive, looks absolutely gorgeous, and emphasizes realism like nothing in the industry.
However, that’s hardly the point. The vast majority of Star Citizen is still incomplete and lacking, and you get anything but a complete experience from the space-faring RPG despite 14 years in development, including pre-production.
It’s undergone development hell quite a few times over the years, as confirmed by an ex-CIG employee
This is a perfect example of what happens when people vote with their wallets – it makes them realize that it was a bad decision and that they should learn going forward. I think this is the key to going forward for the entire project. I think that the team can deliver key gameplay improvements going forward that encourage players to play and return, rather than trying to drip-feed concepts to people who may never fly them,” said u/Ryden-55 in a descriptive post on Reddit.
You could boot up Star Citizen today, but it’ll mostly be a pointless effort. There isn’t much to do in-game, and whatever it is you can play around with, needs more tinkering, so to speak.
Make sure to leave a comment ahead sharing what you think of the project and whether you’ve been a backer.
