As initially reported by PCGamesN, Bethesda has quietly wiped out the Russian language and its subtitle support from Starfield. The internal update was made on April 11th in a surprising turn of events, and the initially-supported language has not been entirely removed from the game. The major cause behind such a move is likely the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, which has also greatly affected the gaming industry, alongside many others.
The removal was made in secrecy in the back end on April 11th, as sighted on the Steam tracking site, SteamDB, in a new internal update to the entry. Starfield will now release without the native Russian language, making it more difficult for the excited Russian-speaking gamers in the community. Moreover, the Steam page has also been updated, and it has now removed the existing Russian language interface and subtitle support.
Various Russian language-related tags have also been drawn from Starfield’s back end, and the Steam page reflects the change. Searching by the specific language tag does not bring Starfield to the store anymore, which affirms Bethesda’s secret removal of the language and subtitle support from the title. It has ignored many of its current popular games on Steam from meeting a similar fate, such as Fallout 4 and The Elder Scrolls Online.
The Russian language and subtitle support is still available in a slew of its existing entries, leaving fans questioning the motives of the giant conglomerate. If the Russian language support expulsion in Starfield is anything to go by, we may see Bethesda Softworks make the same move in the upcoming Redfall or the existing entries.
As the release date of the game approaches close, the sudden removal of the Russian language is nothing short of a surprise. It is also possible Bethesda Softworks removed the Russian language and subtitles because of underlying game-related issues. However, only time will clear this impediment for the Starfield fans.
Bethesda Softworks has not yet commented on the new back-end change, and there could be another reason the Russian language has been slashed from Starfield. We suggest taking the modification with a slight grain of salt, as the language could be added in the future or upon release. Perhaps the developers will also address the situation after it gains more awareness in the community.
Starfield is Bethesda Softworks’ new emerging IP, which has been on the back burner for a huge number of years. Todd Howard appeared in an interview a few months ago and revealed a variety of details for the entry. It will reportedly feature a “deeply human world” rife with life. Robots will be the primary enemies in the game, but many will also assist humans in day-to-day life.
The Bethesda New RPG set in outer space is slated to arrive later this year on September 11th, 2023. Moreover, it will be available on PC and Xbox Series X and Series S; the developers decided to ultimately skip Xbox One to ensure a smooth experience.
