- The idea of a standalone title arose when Dying Light 2’s second DLC leaked online.
I find myself vicariously excited for Dying Light: The Beast—a newly announced upcoming standalone game and a Dying Light series spin-off, given how Kyle Crane — the iconic protagonist from the first game — is back in action. Techland, on the other hand, appears fairly confident about it too, saying that the category of games that this title belongs to might as well be gaming’s future.
Speaking to Gamesindustry.biz at Gamescom this year, Dying Light director and front-man Tymon Smektała made the statement and also explained the origin story of Dying Light: The Beast.
There’s some kind of inertia in the industry and that [obsession] about the number of hours a game can offer. I think it’s actually something that we’ll see more of because the industry will see this as another way they can offer meaningful interactive entertainment to players. This might be a part of the future of games in general.”
Elsewhere, the interview states Techland’s decision to port Dying Light: The Beast to old-gen platforms, specifically the PS4. As a developer, choosing current-gen systems to release your title on is obvious at this point “because that allows you to do more with the game” but what can sometimes matter more is reaching “as many players as possible.”
In addition, many Dying Light 2 Ultimate Edition owners are on last-gen as well, so the idea of abandoning them didn’t sit too right with Techland, and rightfully so.
Dying Light 2 Ultimate Edition Players Will Get The Beast For Free
In case you missed it, Dying Light: The Beast will be free for all those who own the Ultimate Edition of the game. Techland is holding up its end of the bargain because that particular variant of the zombie thriller promised two post-launch story DLCs to players. One of them was delivered, but the other was canned during development, inadvertently leading to the creation of The Beast.
The standalone title has no release date for now, but it is expected to arrive on the Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
