Story Highlights
- The Last of Us Part 2’s composer has accidentally uncovered that a remaster of the game could be in development.
- Gustavo Santaolalla said that a “new edition” of the game lets him play songs in his visual-only cameo.
- The first game in the series also got a next-gen remaster before the PS5 remake, so this does sound plausible.
In a new interview, the composer of The Last of Us Part 2, Gustavo Santaolalla, accidentally revealed that a remaster of the 2020 game is potentially in development. While discussing his virtual cameo in the adventure game, the Brokeback Mountain composer let slip that the “new version” of the title lets him sing songs in his cameo. Hence, a remaster of the critically acclaimed PlayStation exclusive might be in the works as we speak.
Gustavo Santaolalla disclosed this major piece of info during an interview on the YouTube channel Blender. After one of the interviewers expressed his delight at seeing his cameo in The Last of Us Part 2, Santaolalla said around the 1:36:20 mark that the new edition of the game will actually let him sing a few songs in this role. The musician quickly stopped and said he couldn’t tell them anything else but the cat was already out of the bag.
Of course, in the new edition (players) will be able to make me play certain songs and well nothing i can’t tell you anything else.”
As the interview with Blender is in Spanish, the above paragraph is a rough translation of what the Argentinian musician said in the video. But, one thing is for sure, he mentioned a new version of the game where he will sing some tunes in his cameo, and we can only assume it’s a remastered version of The Last of Us Part 2 for the PlayStation 5.
Next-gen remasters are not uncommon for the franchise as many would already know. Recently, Naughty Dog released the complete remake of The Last of Us Part I for PC and PS5, after previously remastering it for the PlayStation 4 back in 2014 after its original release on the PS3 over a decade ago. Hence, a new remaster in the franchise isn’t something so far-fetched, especially after the success of the HBO TV show.
Since its premiere in January, The Last of Us series has become one of the biggest hits not only for HBO but also for Sony. The show broke decade-old viewership records for the American service and also caused a significant rise in sales of the first game. Besides the numbers, the nine-episode drama headed by Neil Druckmann also received universal praise, especially for its performances, writing, and Santaolalla’s score.
Just recently, the first season got a whopping 24 Emmy nominations with nods in almost all categories. Therefore, with the second season already in development, a remaster of The Last of Us Part 2 releasing around the new season’s premiere could be a possibility. When you Consider how well it worked out for 2022’s Part I remake, this new edition does seem like a no-brainer.
In addition, Neil Druckmann has said he doesn’t care about the criticism regarding The Last of Us Part 2’s story and that the show will stick to the source material. Therefore, a remaster will also allow fans to relive the heartbreaking moments of the sequel on the PlayStation 5. Whatever the case one thing is for sure, Last of Us fans have a lot to look forward to with this possible remake, the multiplayer title, and the rumored third game.
