UPDATE: According to a new leak from u/Echiketto on r/GamingLeaksAndRumours, who has allegedly played the game, Assassin’s Creed Nexus will feature timing-based combat, linear mission progression with backtracking, and absolutely no side missions, among a few other interesting tidbits. Furthermore, Ezio is the first character that players will supposedly as.
Sources have confirmed details on the new Assassin’s Creed VR game, which is titled Assassin’s Creed Nexus. The title brings back not only fan-favorite Assassins, including Ezio Auditore da Firenze, but also Assassins from previous AC titles. Ezio, Kassandra, Connor, and Haytham all make playable appearances on a variety of different levels.
The game has everything you’d expect from an Assassin’s Creed title, with stealth movement, pickpocketing, lock picking, combat, climbing, and even the leap of faith.
Assassin’s Creed Nexus has a total of 16 individual missions with a tutorial to get you to grips with the game’s controls. With Nexus being a VR game, though, there are some differences from the standard Assassin’s Creed titles, especially when it comes to movement.
Players can choose to play in one of two styles or a combination of both, which is the norm for a VR title by using the controller analog sticks to move or teleport. As stealth is one of the more important aspects of an Assassin’s Creed game, teleportation comes with a soundbar that lets you know if you’re alerting nearby enemies. Basically, the further away you teleport toward the enemy, the less sound is made.
For example, teleporting 10 feet away from behind an enemy will create less sound than teleporting 3 feet away from them. So it’s usually ideal to teleport some distance away to avoid detection by sound, then crouch towards the enemies with your controllers.
Assassinations and combat in the game are what you would expect from an Assassin’s Creed VR title, with assassinations being the main way to take down enemies. Your hidden blades are extracted by holding down a button and flicking your wrist, which you can use to stab your enemies. Guards seem to die in just one hit when they are assassinated in this way but will require several hits if they are alerted.
Sword combat is also included but is fairly standard for a VR game, where players can swing their swords to attack and defend. It can take four to six sword swings to kill an enemy, but it generally takes one hit to the head.
Lockpicking in the game seems to be a feature to extend the longevity of the missions, with some missions having several different opportunities to lock pick chests and doors throughout the mission. The game was described as being almost like a minigame in a sense, but actively lock-picking chests and doors will lead you to rewards.
As mentioned earlier, the Leap of Faith is also in the game, which according to sources, is an excellent addition that every Assassin’s Creed fan will enjoy. Standing in a T pose and falling off a building into a stack of hay is apparently a really cool experience (just make sure you don’t fall on your face in real life).
Overall, Assassin’s Creed Nexus seems like it’s going to be a really cool and immersive VR experience, and it’s not hard to see how the previously announced Splinter Cell VR game will also play due to both game’s similarities.
After hearing descriptions of the game and seeing it for myself, it’s not hard to see which direction Ubisoft could take the yet-to-be-announced Assassin’s Creed Infinity, first reported by Bloomberg. The title is rumored to have multiple historical settings, which seems to be somewhat similar to how Assassin’s Creed Nexus will play, but on a much smaller scale.
Assassin’s Creed VR and Splinter Cell VR were announced in September 2020, with both projects being led by Ubisoft’s Red Storm Entertainment with support from Ubisoft Düsseldorf, Ubisoft Mumbai, and Ubisoft Reflections. Currently, Ubisoft is still hiring for Assassin’s Creed VR on its website, which suggests that the project is still in its development phase. However, sources suggest that Assassin’s Creed Nexus should be expected to release in the next 12 months.
