Obsidian Entertainment Wants To Make A New Fallout Game

The studio looks to its future, and sees Fallout in it .

Speaking to Dualshockers, Obsidian co-founder Feargus Urquhart talked about the future vision of Obsidian. As Fallout celebrated its 25th-anniversary last week. People are curious whether or not Obsidian could return to making Fallout titles as they did with Fallout New Vegas.

Some have wondered if a new Obsidian Fallout game could be a reality since Obsidian and Bethesda are now owned by Microsoft.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • Obsidian is busy shipping and developing multiple titles at the studio.
  • They are interested in developing a new Fallout game if the opportunity arises.
  • Fallout 6 from Bethesda may not come out until the early 2030s.

Dualshockers asked Urquhart about the possibility of Obsidian returning to developing Fallout titles:

“Of course, if we ever got the opportunity to make another Fallout game, we’d make it. There’s not even a question of whether or not we would do it, it’s just ‘Will the opportunity arise?'” he said. “I hung around at Interplay for probably an extra year because I wanted to work on Fallout more. I love Fallout.”

Obsidian Entertainment released Fallout New Vegas in 2010. They were contracted by Bethesda to develop the title as they were busy developing The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Fallout New Vegas was released to great fanfare and is considered by many fans to be the best in the series due to sticking to its RPG roots.

If we look at Bethesda’s timeline for games, they released their mainline titles every 3-4 years, according to the head of global publishing Pete Hines. If Starfield is to release in 2023, then we could see the Elder Scrolls 6 in 2026-2027, and Fallout 5 from Bethesda in 2029-2030. Of course, these dates could be subject to change if any development issues arise.

It will be a long time until a new Fallout from Bethesda releases. Fallout 76 was released in 2018, so there could be at least an 11-year wait for the next Fallout title. Of course, fans have been waiting even longer for a new Elder Scrolls title. But as Urquhart said, it all depends if the opportunity arises.

But could Obsidian develop a new Fallout? Currently, Obsidian is busy developing multiple titles. They are working on a sequel to the Outer Worlds, which is a few years out. They are also developing Avowed, an Elder Scrolls-like fantasy RPG that could release next year or in 2024. Pentiment, a Narrative RPG in development from the studio will release this November.

Obsidian has its hands tied at the moment, but if Bethesda accepts, there could be room this decade to slip in a new Fallout game to pass the time between mainline Bethesda titles. While people wait patiently for a new Fallout game, a live-action series set in the Fallout universe is coming to Amazon Prime Video.

According to Todd Howard, Bethesda has a one-pager on what Fallout 5 could be, but at this time the studio’s main focus is finishing up Starfield for its 2023 release.

The studio will also slowly ramp up production on the long-awaited Elder Scrolls 6. Bethesda is looking at other possible smaller projects and could develop those in the meantime.
