Sony’s Project Q To Potentially Retail For “Under $300”

According to Microsoft, the new Sony handheld will sell for this price when it launches later this year.

Story Highlights

  • According to Microsoft’s estimates, Sony’s upcoming handheld project Q will cost less than $300.
  • Previous predictions have also put the accessory in this price window, with some forecasting a $200 price point.
  • The console accessory is supposed to release later this year.

A new filing from the legal proceedings between FTC and Microsoft has revealed that Sony’s upcoming handheld, Project Q, will retail for a Switch-esque cost of under $300. Launching later this year, the PlayStation 5 cloud emulator could sell for this price point according to a prediction from Microsoft’s legal team. Hence, even though this is not an exact value, Sony’s competitor believes this is how much the handheld will eventually cost.

As reported by Stephen Totilo, Microsoft lawyers brought up this fact during the latest hearing between FTC and the American tech giant regarding the Activision merger. While comparing the Nintendo Switch with other consoles, the company’s legal team pointed out how there were many similarities between the handheld and PlayStation/Xbox, including games like FIFA, Fortnite, and NBA 2K being available on all of these devices.

At the end of this passage, Microsoft pointed out how Sony is expected to release the handheld version of PlayStation 5, namely Project Q, later this year. And, as per the company’s prediction, this portable console will retail for under $300, giving us the first hint at its value. The price point is not a surprise as many industry experts have forecasted for the handheld would retail for such an asking price.

Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson previously said that he expects Project Q to cost around $200, which does match Microsoft’s prediction and other estimates from the industry. Considering how the Nintendo Switch has retailed for $300 since its inception, Henderson’s projected price point does seem more than fair for a streaming accessory.

Since its reveal at the PlayStation showcase last month, we haven’t been given much information about the upcoming cloud handheld besides its hardware. However, we do know that Project Q will have an 8-inch screen, and the features and buttons of the DualSense controller, in addition to the ability to stream from PlayStation 5 via Wi-Fi or connection using PS5’s Remote Play.
