Sony Has Renewed The Trademark for The Psygnosis Logo

Psygnosis Limited was a British video game publisher located in Liverpool, England. The studio became a division of Sony and started developing games for the original PlayStation. The studio made some great games for Sony and was one of the largest development houses. But, the studio shut down in 2012 when it was working on two PlayStation 4 games. But, a recent trademark may suggest a return of the studio.

As reported by Roberto Serrano’, Sony has recently filed a trademark for the Psygnosis logo. The trademark was registered on December 1, 2021 in US. This is a bit weird as the studio closed down 9 years ago. Keeping trademarks of closed studios is not very common. The studios are no longer in function so their logos remain intact. So, this is a very surprising move by Sony. 

Some think that this indicates the return of Psygnosis. Filing trademarks for closed companies is not common practice so the only answer is the studios revival. We are really keen to see what this means for the company. A rumor is that Firesprite may change its name to Psygnosis. But, a complete return of the studio is the more likely outcome. 

Fans are excited by this prospect as the studio is responsible for developing some really good games. Some of the best known games of the studio are Formula One, Colony Wars and Lemmings. The studio worked on some important PlayStation. some of the games like Prince of Persia 2, Rush our and Toy Story are really famous among players. So, the publisher has had a great impact on some popular games.

A Brief History of the Company

The studio became a part of the Sony Computer Entertainment Europe in 1999. Sony dropped the old name and termed it as SCE Studio Liverpool. Formula One 2001 became the first game of the rebranded studio. Most of the old staff was fired and the studio got a complete rebrand. So, getting a game out this early was great by them. 

Psygnosis closed on August 12, 2012. The Vice President of Sony Worldwide Studios Europe told the news to the staff. The employees formed a spinoff studio called Firesprite which was acquired by Sony in September 2021. So, the fans may be right in thinking that Firesprite is getting a name change soon.

The fans are very curious to know what becomes of this logo renewal. The return of Psygnosis to make games for the new generation is something that every player wants. But, we will have to see if that happens or not.
