TGA Confirms Shadow Of The Erdtree May As Well Win The Game Of The Year Award

DLCs are in for the count too.

Story Highlights

  • The Game Awards is an annual video game ceremony that celebrates the best games of the year.
  • The institute just confirmed in a recent Q&A update that it’ll count DLCs as nominees toward the GOTY award.
  • This has caused a divide in the community, with many calling it a bad decision by TGA organizers.

The Game Awards — arguably the biggest annual video game event in the world — has made a decision that has caused a substantial upset in the gaming community. It’s given DLCs and subsequent expansions such as Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty and Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree the power to take home that shiny Game of the Year award, provided they’re good enough for the people.

Sharing with the internet first, Wario64 on X was quick to spot the new change to The Game Awards’ official site’s FAQ section earlier. It’s now officially confirmed that DLCs can win awards in all categories of The Game Awards, whether that’s Best Action, Best Narrative, Best Performance, or Best Action/Adventure Game.

The Game Awards aims to recognize the best creative and technical work each year, irrespective of the format of that content’s release. Expansion packs, new game seasons, DLCs, remakes and remasters are eligible in all categories, if the jury deems the new creative and technical work to be worthy of a nomination. Factors such as the newness of the content and its price/value should be taken into consideration,” says the updated section.

It’s a decision that I don’t find many agreeing with — myself included — and while that’s a topic for another day, it bears mentioning that 2024 has seen some substantial DLC releases, including Shadow of the Erdtree, Alan Wake 2: Night Springs, and perhaps Starfield: Shattered Space as well.

Elden Ring Shadow Of The Erdtree Has Strong Competition To Battle

While Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree is excellent in its own right, with eXputer giving it a solid 5/5 in its review, it goes without saying that the GOTY nominees will sport some tough competition for the FromSoftware RPG. This includes Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Balatro, Silent Hill 2 Remake, Astro Bot, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and others.
