Only A Single PS1 Game Has Been Added to PS+ Premium in Six Months

Interesting, to say the least.

According to a discovery made by WTXNews, only a single PS1 game has been added to PlayStation Plus Premium over the past six months. That game being Syphon Filter 2.

Major Takeaways:

  • Sony’s recently introduced PlayStation Plus subscription offers 3 tiers, Essentials, Extra, and Premium.
  • One of the primary selling points of the Premium Subscription is its “Classics Catalog”
  • The Classics Catalog offers games from the PS3, PS2, PS1, and the PSP.
  • Over the past six months, only a single PS1 game has been added to Sony’s PlayStation Plus Premium subscription.

PS+ Premium is Sony’s highest-tier subscription. While it offers other bonuses such as free trials for new and upcoming games as well as Cloud Streaming. The biggest draw of the service by far is its Classics Catalog which lets you play games from the PS3, PS2, PS1, and the PSP on your PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

For a company with a legacy as invaluable as Sony, the meager offerings in their classics catalog are disappointing, to say the least. With many major PS1 titles that are outright absent from the catalog such as the original Metal Gear Solid, Tenchu, Final Fantasy 7,8, and 9, Silent Hill, and many…many more.

Furthermore, the most popular game on the service was…” Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue” and no we’re not making this up. Not to imply it was a bad game, it was a competent platform, but hardly the kind of game you’d expect to see topping the charts.

Toy Story 2 was immediately followed by a much more reasonable entry with Tekken 2. One of the most iconic games on the system. Why other entries like Tekken 1 and Tekken 3 have not been added to the service remains a mystery even now.

What doesn’t remain a mystery, however, is Sony’s neglect of one of the selling points of their PS+ premium subscription tier. A tier that costs a whopping $17.99 for a month and an astounding $119.99 for a year. Costing $19.99 more than the PlayStation Extra subscription which is a much better deal.

With the current state of PS+ Premium, it’s hard to see it as anything more than a (very expensive) novelty that doesn’t bring much to the table. If you want to play PS1 games? Just get a VITA.
