Avowed Devs Planned To Add Romance But Left It To Focus On Companions’ Other Aspects

In an interview with Windows Central, Avowed creative director Carrie Patel and gameplay director Gabe Paramo confirmed that romance was deeply considered for the game. However, Obsidian eventually decided to ditch it in favor of expanding the game companions in various other ways. Including romance would’ve taken many resources, like needing the team to whip up a separate path for each companion. 

We don’t have romance in Avowed. I know it’s something that many players love, and it’s something that we very seriously talked about, and considered the investment required to do it,” said Patel.

The studio knows that fans love the mechanic, but including that was not worth it compared to everything else they could add. As a result, we’ll see a lot of depth in the characters instead of romance options.

We wanted to make sure that if we were going to do romance, we were going to really, really, really do it right — or not at all. For Avowed, we decided to focus on other aspects of our companions.”

The Combat In Avowed Has Already Been Significantly Improved

The game footage shown in the past gave us glimpses of the game’s combat. And it was nowhere near as good as many expected. However, that was known by the devs since it’s still a WIP project. The new interview confirms that the combat has been improved. As seen in the latest footage, significant changes have been made to add that missing oomph, as confirmed by the gameplay director.

The new Obsidian first-person RPG is set to come out sometime this year for PC and Xbox Series X|S platforms. Unfortunately, the devs have not yet confirmed an exact release date, but we can expect Avowed to drop in the last quarter of this year.
