Sonic Dream Team Review – The Best Classic Sonic Title In Years

Our story unfolds as series’ antagonist Dr. Eggman stumbles upon a device called the Reverie, a contraption that has the power to materialize dreams into reality. However, his dreams manifest as chaotic nightmare mazes filled with menacing robot crabs and other perils.

So now Sonic embarks on a journey through these dream worlds to thwart Eggman’s malevolent plans and rescue his friends. I found these dreamscapes to be diverse and enchanting experiences, as they allowed for inventive level design and ample opportunities for creativity.

Each stage feels like a unique playground within a larger dream narrative. From the sunlit shores of Scrambled Shores to the fantastical realm of Dream Factory, the perplexing Nightmare Maze, and the bustling Ego City, each place provides unique aesthetics.

Despite the linear nature of the stages, each one is intricately crafted, drawing inspiration from classics like Sonic Heroes.

Sega Hardlight’s expertise in platforming is evident in their level of design. These designs, while a bit constrained by the mobile platform, manage to capture the integral essence of classic Sonic environments.

From loop-de-loops to rail-grinding sections, the architecture of each stage pays homage to the hedgehog’s storied history while incorporating new elements that suit this title. Its game also employs motion comic cutscenes to convey its story, blending English voice acting with still images.

While Sonic narratives have often been criticized for their simplicity, this spin-off entry manages to infuse personality and charm into its characters. It takes an intriguing turn with the mysterious disappearance of Cream and Cheese, adding a layer of urgency to their quest.

A new character, Ariem, also plays a pivotal role in the plot. Ariem’s enigmatic qualities contribute to the unfolding mystery, and her dynamic with Sonic and Amy introduces an element of unpredictability.

As players progress through these worlds, the plot is revealed through interactions with Eggman, offering insights into his ambitions and the consequences of meddling with dreams. 

However, I found Sonic Dream Team’s primary weakness to be its short length. The main story can be completed within four hours, offering a quick play that left me yearning for a more extended adventure.

Although there is a replay option, the levels can get repetitive fairly quickly. Also, boss battles, while visually impressive, lack any substantial challenge. 

Gameplay

At its core, this title adheres to the fundamental principle of Sonic games – speed. The Boost Sonic gameplay style takes center stage, allowing players to blaze through levels with unparalleled velocity. The controls are snappy and intuitive, facilitating seamless transitions between actions.

Dream Team proves that a mobile platform, particularly devices like the iPhone 14 Plus, can also be an excellent canvas for Sonic’s lightning-fast maneuvers.

Each dream world also comprises three acts, and the objectives and challenges here were varied and exciting, encouraging me to strategically explore and replay levels. They offer a balanced mix of high-speed runs and precision-based tasks.

A notable addition is the inclusion of Tails’ Challenges, providing a weekly competitive aspect, which injects additional dynamism into the experience. And although some may feel reminiscent of tasks encountered in the main storyline., I feel that coupled with the main story, they contribute to keep players thoroughly engaged.

Six playable characters are also introduced, each bringing unique abilities to the table. Sonic and Amy exemplify the classic high-speed gameplay, featuring thrilling stage navigation and action-packed sequences.

Tails and Cream on the other hand introduce flight mechanics, allowing players to soar through the dreamscapes, while Knuckles and Rouge provide the ability to climb and glide, adding strategic layers to platforming.

Dream Team’s Boost mechanic, a hallmark of recent Sonic titles, empowers players to maintain momentum and zip through levels at incredible speeds. This feature aligns seamlessly with the mobile gaming experience, offering an exhilarating and visually impressive showcase of its signature speed.

It comes with a boost meter which, when strategically managed, becomes a tool for players to master the art of maintaining unbroken momentum. Combining all these elements Dream’s gameplay successfully captures the exhilarating spirit of Sonic while introducing new elements that add depth to the experience.

As a result, it offers an engaging and fast-paced adventure that resonates with both longtime fans and newcomers to the Sonic universe.

Visuals And Performance

This game’s graphics at a glance rival the quality of console Sonic titles, a testament to advancements made in mobile gaming technology. The dreamscapes, crafted with meticulous detail, immerse players in a colorful and dynamic world that feels both nostalgic and fresh.

Each of the four zones offers a distinct visual theme, contributing to a diverse and visually engaging experience.

All character models, notably Sonic and his friends, boast a level of detail and polish that aligns with standards set by recent console releases. The fluidity of character animations, especially during high-speed sequences, adds to the overall sense of immersion.

Performance-wise, I felt that Sonic Dream Team delivers a smooth and responsive gaming experience. The controls, whether using a controller or touch controls, are finely tuned to complement Sonic’s swift movements. Their responsiveness is crucial, especially during high-speed sections where split-second decisions are necessary.

Its soundtrack also greatly complements the overall experience. Composed by Michael Van Den Bos, it features a blend of dreamlike sounds and effects, reminiscent of the classic NIGHTS into Dreams series. While not reaching the iconic status of some Sonic tunes, I think that it manages to add to the immersive quality.

Verdict

Sonic Dream Team rockets into the mobile gaming scene as a new adventure, breathing new life into the iconic blue blur’s legacy. While its engaging gameplay, diverse character roster, and unique levels pay homage to Sonic’s roots, the short duration of its main story leaves players yearning for more.

Sega Hardlight’s expertise shines through in seamless controls, console-grade visuals, and a soundtrack that complements the high-speed action. It stands as a beacon in the mobile gaming landscape, blending nostalgia with fresh elements and offering a tantalizing glimpse into the future possibilities of the beloved franchise.
