Sony has been part of the VR gaming market since 2016 with PlayStation VR(PSVR). Without being overly popular, the VR headset has helped Sony build its report among VR gamers. But compared to its competitors, mainly Meta Quest and Quest 2, PSVR hasn’t really taken off.
Sony, in a bid to compete with Meta’s VR sets, announced the next-gen VR headset, PlayStation VR2. The announcement was made during this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, CES in short, in January.
MAJOR TAKEAWAYS
- Images of Sony’s next-gen VR, PSVR2, have been leaked online.
- The VR headset was announced in January this year.
- The leaked images include a manual and a package box.
- PSVR2 will be released in early 2023 as announced by Sony.
Now the images of the manual and the package box of the VR headset have leaked online.
The leaked images include headset specifications, features, and safety guidelines along with the product description. The leaks basically confirm its immediate launch at the start of 2023, as announced by Sony.
PSVR2, unlike its predecessor, will have a bigger OLED display with a 4k resolution. The VR headset will also have head-mounted haptics, which is a first for commercially available VR sets along with touch-detecting controllers known as Sense. These controllers, equipped with haptic feedback, are the most-anticipated feature of the headset.
PSVR2 will also have eye-tracking along with 4 cameras to track player movements, that’s an increase from the PSVR with one camera.
PSVR2 will have a single type-C USB port, through which it can be connected to PlayStation 5. Despite the improved features, the fans were left disappointed as Sony announced that the VR headset won’t be backward compatible with PSVR titles. It was a major letdown as the PSVR has tons of well-known video games, including Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Hitman III, Sniper Elite, and Tekken 7.
Despite the dissatisfaction of PlayStation fans, Sony is confident that PSVR2 will be able to compete with other more popular headsets. With growing competition with Microsoft, Sony is also seeking to diversify its investment in the industry with the launch of PSVR2.
Now with these image leaks, it’s most likely that PSVR2 will be released by February of next year. The headset will be compatible with PS5 only.
