Saints Row’s Reboot “Did Not Meet Full Expectations,” Says Embracer Group

The game left the fanbase polarized and the critical reception was also subpar

Action-adventure RPGs have become one of the most popular and valuable genres in gaming. Sandbox open-world games with a mission-based progression system have become immensely popular due to games like GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2. The freedom this genre provides to the players is the main reason it is so in demand.

It will come as no surprise to anyone that other studios have tried to replicate Rockstar’s success. Many open-world games like Watch Dogs have tried to launch franchises as successful as GTA. Probably the most popular of these GTA clones is Saints Row.

Although it isn’t as successful as GTA, the series has become one of the best-selling franchises in gaming history. The later games in the series have tried to innovate new things to lose the GTA comparison, but this hasn’t gone down well with the fans. No game in the series is a better example of this than the most recent Saints Row reboot.

Major Takeaways:

  • The critical reception of Saints Row did not meet the expectations of the Embracer Group.
  • Volition is working hard to patch the game and give players a better experience.
  • The game did well financially according to the Embracer Group.

The reception of the Saints Row reboot did not meet the expectations of the parent company Embracer Group. In their quarter 2 interim reports for the year 2022, the company talks about the performance of the 5th game in the series. And the main consensus is that its critical reception was not good.

The reception of Saints Row did not meet the full expectations and left the fanbase partially polarized. The game development studio, Volition, has been working hard to improve the player experience,” says Embracer.

The financial report said that the Saints Row reboot left the fans of the series polarized. A big reason for this was the technical issues the players had to face when the game first launched. It had a large number of bugs and many reviews called it “barely playable.”

In the report, Embracer groups say that Volition is working hard to make this right. The studio is doing its best to improve the player experience of the Saints Row Reboot. A huge update patch has been put out on the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 so Volition has been working hard.

Surprisingly though, the financial performance of Saints Row has not been bad. According to the Embracer group report, the reboot’s performance was in-line with the management expectation for quarter 2. Considering the icy reception and the bugs it had on launch, this is a pleasant surprise.

Saints Row did attract more than 1 million players by October 2022, so it did hold up well. Hopefully, this means a new game in the series will be green-lit and released sooner. Maybe Volition can learn from the mistakes they have made this time and give us a better game.
