Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Continues Top-Selling Run; Beats God Of War Ragnarok

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet stand third on the sales list.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 dominated the October US sales despite releasing in the last week of the month. Many were expecting God of War Ragnarok to dethrone the title. Despite all that shiny advertising from Sony for GoW Ragnarok, it appears that CoD MWII has continued its domination in November.

MAJOR TAKEAWAYS

  • According to the sales data published by NPD Group, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 has topped November sales charts leaving GoW Ragnarok at the second.
  • The Call of Duty game was the best-selling game in October as well.
  • The game also dethroned Elden Ring in the best-selling game “year-to-date” chart.

According to the US sales data published by the NPD Group, Call of Duty MWII has kept its throne at the top for the second month running. Much to the surprise of many, it has outsold several newly released titles.

November Sales Chart

Trailing behind it at the second sits God of War Ragnarok. The PlayStation-exclusive title was released in the second week of November, perhaps the reason behind it being the second. The game is followed by another new release, Pokemon Scarlet/Violet.

Pokemon Scarlet/Violet is 3rd on the monthly sales chart. The Nintendo-exclusive game received mixed reviews on its release on November 18. The sales data for this game does not include digital sales as Nintendo only releases retail sales data.

On the fourth, there’s yet another new entry, Sonic Frontiers. The SEGA multi-platformer was released on the 8th of November. The game recently went head-to-head with Genshin Impact for The Game Awards Player’s Voice award, narrowly losing it in the end.

The NPD Group also published an updated “year-to-date” game sales chart. Call of Duty MWII has finally topped that chart, dethroning Elden Ring. It is quite an amazing feat for a game released just over a month ago.

Year-to-Date Sales Chart

Elden Ring had held that position for most of the year since its release in February. God of War Ragnarok is fifth on the chart. While Pokemon Scarlet/Violet stands seventh on the list.

The NPD Group also released data for mobile game sales. The mobile games market saw a major decrease in YoY profits. Thanksgiving and Black Friday saw a 5% YoY decrease. The market even performed worse than in 2020.

Casino games were the only genre that saw YoY growth, taking the first spot in monthly sales for the first time in over two years. The market is projected to decrease by 1-2% from 2021. The group has also published November’s top 10 mobile games by U.S. consumer spending, which is as followed:

  1. Candy Crush Saga
  2. Roblox
  3. Royal Match
  4. Coin Master
  5. Clash of Clans

There were fears that like every other industry, the gaming industry would suffer from the effects of increasing uncertainty. But despite going through post-pandemic recovery and amid financial uncertainty, the industry has performed quite well.

It has even outperformed last year’s sales figures. The profits were mostly driven by hardware sales, which saw a monthly YoY increase of 45%. The increase is being attributed to PlayStation 5, which was November’s best-selling hardware platform.

Will GoW Ragnarok be able to outsell CoD MWII in December? Discuss in the comments section below.
