It seems that Rocket League, the massively popular sports/racer hybrid by Psyonix Studios, is finally moving to the Unreal Engine 5 following their partnership with Epic Games. This was confirmed by a recent job listing that talked about their upcoming projects, one of them being Rocket League’s move to Unreal Engine 5. The Job listing has since been updated to remove the part about the shift to Unreal Engine 5 but a Twitter user by the name of GoldfishRL, who is also a Youtube content creator for the game as well as a moderator on the official Rocket League subreddit, posted the screenshot on Twitter only a few hours ago.
This leak was further confirmed later by Psyonix themselves, with a developer on Reddit commenting:
“Upgrading the technology that powers Rocket League, including a move to UE5, is something we are actively working on. This is a long-term project for us, and we’ll share more details when we’re ready to show our players what’s coming next.” This suggests that the update itself is quite a ways away from now considering its massive scope but Rocket League fans can very well expect a massive visual overhaul to the game whenever this update launches.
Rocket League came out back in 2015 and instantly became a worldwide phenomenon, at the time you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who wasn’t obsessively putting their hours into Rocket League. It was widely praised for its addicting gameplay loop as well as its unique premise of combining football with race cars despite its relatively steep learning curve and a very high skill ceiling, which has frankly only attributed to the game’s long-running fame and longevity. Since then the game has experienced a steady string of updates adding various exciting cross-over events as well as tons of new content and features to the much-beloved title.
