Spider-Man And The Last Of Us Sales Make Sony A Top 20 PC Publisher

In its 2023 business segment, Sony revealed that Marvel’s Spider-Man has sold 1.5 million copies on PC, with The Last of Us Part 1 also selling an impressive 368k units in under a month. The brilliant sales of these original PlayStation titles also made Sony a top 20 publisher on the platform. In addition, the Japanese company’s overall revenue on PC grew over 3x in FY22, showcasing the success of these PC ports.

Sony revealed this info and much more in its annual Business Segment Meeting. According to the documents, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered has pulled in over $52 million in revenue on PC. The rebuilt version of the 2018 PlayStation hit came out on PC for the first time in August 2022. Its sales on PC further add to the 33 million plus the series has already sold on PS4 and PS5.

Sony’s other recent major release on PC, The Last of Us Part 1, has also sold surprisingly well this year. After launching on March 28, 2023, for PC, the action-adventure title has made $15.5 million in revenue. Even though patches have fixed a lot of issues, Iron Galaxy’s PC port was barely playable at first. Hence, considering, how the game had a very messy launch, this figure and the 368k unit sales are a great accomplishment. 

In addition, these figures are only true as of April 23, 2023, so The Last of Us Part 1 didn’t even take a month to sell this much. Furthermore, Sony expects PC ports of exclusive PlayStation titles to sell 20% of their console counterparts in FY23. Taking into account the huge numbers PlayStation games sell in and the $450 million Sony is expecting to make this fiscal year, the company surely has big plans for the platform.

However, even with this continuous growth in PC, the platform still won’t receive PlayStation exclusives quickly. Jim Ryan confirmed that first-party Sony games will continue to release two or three years after launching on PlayStation. Considering how the primary goal of Sony is to sell more PlayStation 5 consoles, this makes total sense. As a result, it will surely take a long time before players get to try God of War Ragnarok on PC.

The PlayStation CEO also said that even though this model was acceptable to fans, some games will depart from it. For instance, the upcoming live-service titles will release on both PC and PlayStation 5 simultaneously. Hence, the collaboration between these two platforms is only going to increase in the future. Sony has some huge blockbusters in the works right now that will become official in the upcoming PlayStation Showcase.
