- Unsurprisingly, Gollum has still not received a single positive review on Metacritic.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is officially the worst game of 2023, easily beating Redfall’s rocky launch. As per its ratings on multiple platforms, the game has still not received positive remarks. While some people are defending the developers due to smaller studios getting less budget for game development, many are still upset, given how Gollum shares the same price tag as Hogwarts Legacy, Elden Ring, and Marvel’s Spider-Man, to name a few.
Gollum seems to be on a roll for setting bad records this year. Just when people thought it couldn’t get worse after Redfall, Gollum set a new low, having 16 less Metascore than Redfall, which stands at 56. Not to mention, the PC version is doing only slightly better than PS5, with 43 Metascore. If you browse Metacritic based on yearly releases, Gollum sits at the bottom, ranking 297 (PC) and 298 (PS5).
Unsurprisingly, Gollum has not received a single positive review out of the 49 reviews it has on Metacritic. The best review it received was from GamingTrend: “A finicky and redundant platforming system, mixed with a dialogue system that lacks bite makes for a combination that drags the rest down. Gollum is always so close to The Ring, but ever so far.” Among the worst reviews, some critics did not hold back on Gollum.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum was conceptually a game with some promise, but from what I’ve seen so far, it’s a mediocre and messy experience that doesn’t really come together into a cohesive whole. That is, of course, before coming to the bugs, the crashes and the game-breaking progression issues that make it impossible to complete at this time. Considering that I was actually looking forward to this, this one really stings.” – TheSixthAxis
The ratings on other platforms are not good either; with a 42-critic average and only 4% recommendation on OpenCritic, the game struggles to get a positive remark. Some fans believe that the 4% is way more than it deserves, showing the disappointment from fans. As expected, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum sits at the bottom, ranking 217 on OpenCritic.
Set in the fictional world of Middle-earth, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum follows Gollum’s story eight years before the events of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. It was developed by Daedalic Entertainment and was released on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. Gollum will be released on Nintendo Switch later this year.
