It is quite a massive achievement for the humble age of Switch, and plenty of variables fell just into the right place to cause an enormous boost in the sales of Switch.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom entry is nothing short of a tour de force for the conglomerate, already shifting over 18.51 million copies since release. It is evaluated that the entry rolled over a total of 15.7 million units to buyers within a span of only eight weeks. Its release gave a huge boost to the first quarter of FY24.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which was released on May 12, has made a major contribution to Q1 sales in the current environment, in which we see widespread adoption of Nintendo Switch hardware and continued play engagement by many consumers,” mentions Nintendo in the report.
For comparison, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has shipped 36.65 million copies in its entire lifetime. ToTK is set to overtake that figure in another quarter or two if the current pace continues. As per the financial results, the sell-through of Tears of the Kingdom almost amounted to half of the first-party software sales that Nintendo made in Q1 FY24.
The report also says that users who first played Breath of the Wild are the main players of Tears of the Kingdom, but the dynamic has begun to shift recently. Per the report, more gamers new to the series are picking up ToTK as their first entry after its popularity soared. Sales for past Nintendo games have also stayed strong. Titles like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold 1.67 million units during Q1 FY24, gaining a huge 55.46 million total figure.
Digital sales during the first quarter increased by 35.9% year-on-year to 119.6 billion yen and accounted for 47.3% of total software sales for our dedicated video game platform.”
Overall, Nintendo rolled over 3.91 million Switch hardware during the FY24 first quarter. The huge figure conveys a 13.9% growth in shipments year-on-year. Taking a look at Nintendo’s financial results, the sales amounted to 461.3 billion yen, boosting 50% year-on-year. The operating profit this quarter was 185.4 billion yen, which rose by 82.4% year-on-year. It has proven to be a very notable quarter for the company this quarter.
Nintendo has grown to be a giant in the last half a decade because of Switch and its enticing portfolio of first-party titles. Even the judge during the Microsoft vs. FTC trial ruled that the handheld indeed competes with Sony and Microsoft in gaming. While releases of first-party games will slow down on the console due to its age, many third-party entries are planned for later this year.
