- Originally, the game was planned to get two DLC expansions but they were merged into one package.
The Kadokawa Quarterly report has confirmed that several measures are in place to maximize the lifetime value of Elden Ring. This includes the upcoming major expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree. Furthermore, the report explains the cause of lower profits in the gaming segment, citing decreased sales of FromSoftware‘s big hit from last year.
During the year of its launch, Elden Ring was met with universal acclaim. In addition, the game received several accolades, including the Nebula Award, which added to its momentum. Said momentum has slowed down since then as infinite growth isn’t realistic. It should be noted that the involved parties are trying to manage the IP in a manner that maximizes its value, hence the pacing of upcoming projects.
While the report has elaborated on what these measures are, fans speculate that an Elden Ring anime might be in the pipeline. This conclusion was drawn from a capital alliance formed between the Kadokawa Corporation, CyberAgent, and Sony to reinforce game and animation businesses. Given the nature of such projects, fans believe that merchandising might also play into it.

It’s also worth mentioning that Elden Ring was originally going to get two DLC expansions. The idea was later scrapped and FromSoftware decided to merge both parts into one massive package. In the past, DLC packs for Soulsborne games were launched in the same year as the base game, similar to most games. Bloodborne’s The Old Hunters expansion was a single package that added hours of content and lore to the base game.
Considering the scale of Elden Ring and the fusion of its two DLC packs, we can assume the upcoming expansion aims to provide a phenomenal experience. Elsewhere, a free-to-read manga for the game was also released, taking a more light-hearted and comedic approach.
It remains to be seen what these measures will be but the first one on the list is the upcoming expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree. While there’s been no official announcement of its release date, it’s being speculated to launch in 2024 or Q4 of 2023. In any case, more time in the oven will definitely allow FromSoftware to further polish the DLC and avoid repeating the same mistakes as they did with the base game.
Elden Ring is out now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PC, and last-gen consoles.
