Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 characters are comprised of both new and returning faces, which has fans like me excited for what’s to come in this sequel from Insomniac Games. With the game slated to launch in roughly a week or so, it’s imperative that you brush up on where each character is so far in the main storytelling after the events of both the previous game and the spin-off title of Miles Morales.
- Based on the pre-release information shown so far in Story Trailers, the main character cast in Spider-Man 2 features both new and returning faces.
- Spider-Man 2 will mark the first time fans will get to see Harry Osborn properly along with Peter Parker.
- Venom and Kraven are the two main new antagonists confirmed so far, including Mysterio.
- Other characters set to return from previous Spider-Man entries include Rio Morales, Yuri Watanabe, and Ganke Lee.
Peter Parker
CATEGORY | INFORMATION |
Role | Spider-Man (Main Character) |
Abilities | Web shooting, Wall Crawling, High Mobility and Strength |
Our Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, last seen featured in the spin-off title, Miles Morales, left Miles in charge while he went to check up on MJ in Symkaria. In the original Marvel’s Spider-Man, Peter battled the Sinister Six, having an emotional conflict against Doctor Octavius and losing Aunt May towards the end.
In Spider-Man 2, from all the recent footage I’ve seen from the trailers so far, Insomniac is seemingly pushing for Peter’s dark and grittier side with a deeper layer of character development as he dons the Symbiote black suit to save NYC from a greater threat like any other, plus also reunites with his best friend, Harry Osborn.
Miles Morales
CATEGORY | INFORMATION |
Role | Spider-Man (Secondary Main Character) |
Abilities | Web shooting, Wall Crawling, Electrical Burst powers, Camoflouge |
The list of Spider-Man 2 characters wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the secondary Spider-Man, Miles Morales. His dad was killed in an accident during the events of the first game but, simultaneously in the story, was bitten by a radioactive spider; after that, Peter Parker takes him under his wing as a protégé to train him and make him a Spider-Man.
In Spider-Man 2, Miles has grown a lot since the events of his spin-off title as he supports a brand-new haircut and joins Peter side-by-side to defend New York against the new rising evil of Kraven and Venom.
Mary Jane (M.J.) Watson
CATEGORY | INFORMATION |
Role | Supporting Character |
Abilities | None |
Mary Jane Watson is the romantic interest of Peter Parker, who, in the original game, had seemingly broken up with Peter Parker but, towards the end, discovered a rekindled love for each other. In Spider-Man 2, MJ still works for the Daily Bugle as a journalist/investigator but tries to balance her work life with Peter to spend time with him. Her new face model surprised me as she looks more mature than before.
Venom
CATEGORY | INFORMATION |
Role | Main Antagonist |
Abilities | Symbiote Alien powers, High Mobility, and Strength |
Most of what I’ve seen of Venom is purely based on speculation, and since I won’t spoil what’s already shown, it is also unclear whether he’ll truly be the main villain or act as an anti-hero in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 characters. Fans like me have theorized that Harry Osborn is infected with the Symbiote if piecing together hints from the first game, but that begs to be seen since Insomniac can drastically subvert expectations here.
Kraven The Hunter
CATEGORY | INFORMATION |
Name | Sergei Kravinhoff |
Role | Secondary Antagonist |
Abilities | Superhuman strength and agility |
Kraven The Hunter, AKA Sergei Kravinhoff, was first revealed alongside the Gameplay reveal trailer for Spider-Man 2 as he invaded New York to capture the mutant Lizard with his henchmen. Kraven, alongside his hunters, plans to take over New York and will be one of the secondary antagonists with Venom.
Lizard
CATEGORY | INFORMATION |
Name | Doctor Curt Connors |
Role | Antagonist/Anti-Hero |
Abilities | Mutant Amphibian properties, Superhuman strength and agility |
Lizard is revealed during the Gameplay trailer of Spider-Man 2, where Kraven and his henchmen are pursuing him while the two Spider-Men try their best to fend them off. It is unclear how Dr Curt Connors manages to succumb to the Lizard’s mutant transformation, a question that will likely get answered in the storytelling events. I don’t think Curt means any ill will or harm, as it looks like he lost his consciousness in the Lizard’s transformation.
Harry Osborn
CATEGORY | INFORMATION |
Role | Supporting Character |
Abilities | None/TBD |
Harry Osborn is Peter Parker’s best friend, whom we see in the original game’s post-credits scene, is discovered to be in a vegetative state with his father, Norman, trying to craft a cure for the terminal illness. In Spider-Man 2, we find out that he is seemingly been cured and is now back in friendship with Peter. But how his bond continues with Peter is still left to be seen since a lot has happened since their last time with each other.
Norman Osborn
CATEGORY | INFORMATION |
Role | CEO of Oscorp Industries/Supporting Character |
Abilities | None |
The CEO of Oscorp Industries, Norman Osborn, returns in Spider-Man 2 as we can now hopefully experience the emotional side of his character now that his son, Harry, is cured. In the original game’s events, Norman was the NYC Mayor until he resigned due to being unable to control the events surrounding the Devil’s Breath Serum and the escaped fugitives and Sinister Six terrorizing the City.
Other Confirmed Characters
There are also a few other confirmed characters to appear in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which comprise both new and other returning faces consisting of villains and even minor characters.
- Martin Li, AKA Mr Negative
- Yuri Watanabe (Wraith)
- J. Jonah Jameson
- Rio Morales
- Ganke Lee
- Black Cat, AKA Felicia Hardy
- Mysterio
My Opinion On Spider-Man 2’s Characters
As someone who’s pre-ordered Spider-Man 2 and has played both previous entries, I cannot wait for how Venom will be written in Insomniac’s universe. The inclusion of Harry Osborn has me intrigued, too, as I’ll finally be able to see him interact with Peter after everything that’s happened.
This concludes my Spiderman 2 Characters guide. There might still be some surprising character returns that we might see on the game’s launch, but these are all the ones I could find and confirm via the trailers and Playstation Blogposts. Let me know if you’re as hyped as I am for Spider-Man 2 in the comments section below!
