In an interview with VGC, Star Wars Outlaws’ creative director, Julian Gerighty, was asked about the negative reactions to some previews. The dev clarified that he hadn’t analyzed them yet because of a lack of time. However, he has welcomed unexpected comparisons to Naughty Dog’s Uncharted. The dev argues that Ubisoft has cooked up a “compelling overall game,” but only a part of it was shown.
I mean, for me it wasn’t necessarily our reference point. It’s such a wonderful game to be compared to though, so if you’re going to be compared to somebody, it might as well be the best in the industry. Naughty Dog and what they do is absolutely brilliant, so I’ll take it, but it wasn’t the point of origin,” says Julian.
The short Star Wars Outlaws demo had to be prepared in a way that could show the most diverse amount of content. It took the focus away from essential elements like the open-world moments that fans craved. So, it was nothing but a “starter” and far from the main course.
We had to choose something that was 20 minutes, bite-sized, lots of variety, lots of representative systems, but not the open world experience, because we’re going to expose that during the studio tour, in the preview event over here.”
The Community Response On Star Wars Outlaws Has Been Divided
The previews so far have been quite split. Some dubbed the demo a dull experience, while others blamed Ubisoft for playing it way too safe. It appears that many previews agree that it has just not delivered everything that the fans expected. However, the final release may turn out to be much better than the criticized early demo.
