Gearbox CEO On Cancer Patient Asking To Play Borderlands 4 Early: “We’ll Do Whatever We Can”

History repeats itself.

Story Highlights

  • Borderlands 4 is an upcoming first-person RPG shooter and a continuation of the epic franchise.
  • A cancer patient with an uncertain future shared his story online, asking to play Borderlands 4 early.
  • This grabbed the attention of Borderlands 4’s developers, and a collab is now in place.

Well, it’s sure not everyday that the internet comes together to make something beautiful happen.

Caleb McAlpine, a 37-year-old fighting cancer, has taken to Reddit to share his story and talk about his life-long passion for the Borderlands franchise. Being uncertain of his future, Caleb expressed that he wished there was a way to play Borderlands 4 — a forthcoming first-person shooter — early because he might sadly not be around for when the title is officially out.

Don’t know if this is possible

Within a matter of a few hours, Caleb’s post started to gain a ton of attention, garnering interest from members all over the subreddit and thousands of upvotes. Soon, popular Borderlands Twitch and YouTube streamer K11ler Six was tagged, and he was able to forward the query to someone over at Gearbox.

Not long afterward, Gearbox’s CEO Randy Pitchford acknowledged the entire affair, taking to X and affirming,

Caleb and I are now chatting via e-mail and we’re going to do whatever we can to make something happen.”

Caleb says that he’s got “late stage 4 terminal cancer” that’s now spread to his entire liver. Even if chemotherapy works in his favor, the doctors give him 2 years at best. Otherwise, we’re talking about 7-12 months here, tops.

You can find more information realting to Caleb’s battle with cancer on his Gofundme page. It seems that the fundraiser has accumulated a ton of donations ever since the Reddit post went viral. The campaign had only raised about $2,000 as of yesterday, but after 24 hours, it seems that the $9,000 goal has been long reached.

Coming across as one of the most hyped-up shooters due for release next year, Borderlands 4 was teased two months ago in August with a brief trailer. This, obviously, ignited a fire in the Borderlands community, coming especially after the ridiculous bombing of the Borderlands movie.

Delays in the video gaming industry are not an uncommon occurrence, so Caleb getting to enjoy the forthcoming shooter early ahead would be a win for not just him, but the entire gaming community as well. If this story developers, I’ll make sure to update the article.
