There’s not a first-person shooter RPG out there that gripped and visually thrilled me more than CDPR’s Cyberpunk 2077, so when one hears that it’s doing well commercially, one understands that the project more than just deserves it. The developer has announced in a recent earnings update that the title has rolled over more than 30 million units to date.
In less than four years since release we’ve already sold 30 million copies of Cyberpunk 2077, and as for Phantom Liberty – in just over a year it has sold over 8 million copies. These are impressive figures. I’m very happy to see a large, dedicated community coalesce around our Cyberpunk games. In the coming year the base game, along with its expansion, will be released to a new group of users: owners of Mac devices powered by Apple Silicon chips,” said CD Projekt’s joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski.
CD Projekt’s CFO Piotr Nielubowicz also remarks that both Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty “continue to sell very well” and despite the negative reception that the project endured on launch, it’s come out highly successful. This is, of course, thanks to Update 2.0 and the onset of the Phantom Liberty DLC expansion, both of which have dramatically elevated the Cyberpunk gameplay experience.
Note: Back in January, the company confirmed that cumulative franchise sales have topped the 25-million mark.
There’s Good News Already For Cyberpunk’s Sequel
It bears mentioning that CD Projekt is also working toward a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel. It’s still in its fairly early stages of development, and we also know its codenamed Orion so far. Where it’ll be set, what characters it will encompass, are things that remain in mystery at the moment.
What we do know, however, is that the sequel’s development team consists of former modders, which should grant the project that extra creative flair that many gamers look for these days.
Cyberpunk 2077 came out on December 10, 2020, for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, later arriving on the Xbox Series X|S and PS5 as well. Its one-and-only DLC expansion Phantom Liberty was rated 4.5/5.0 in eXputer’s review, with author Usama Mehmood remarking,
With the release of Phantom Liberty, CD Projekt Red has finally delivered the grand RPG they promised all those years ago.”
