Babylon’s Fall is a role-playing, live-service game developed by PlatinumGames, a Japanese game developer, based in Osaka, mainly known for developing single-player action titles like Bayonetta, NieR: Automata, and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.
The game is PlatinumGames’ first venture into the multiplayer genre. Announced back in 2018, the production had already begun one year earlier as reported by the developers afterward.
In 2021, the developers revealed that Babylon’s Fall will be a multiplayer, live-service game. PlatinumGames even opened a new Tokyo studio to help the studio make live-service games.
The studio held the game’s first closed beta in July 2021 in Japan and August 2021 in Europe and North America. The reception was very negative with critics suggesting the developer was rushing the game and it needed more work.
Most of the complaints were about the game’s visual style, with many calling it blurry and pixelated. PlatinumGames listened to the feedback and claimed that they had gotten rid of the issues pointed out by the reviews.
In an interview, Takahisa Sugiyama, one of the game’s directors stated that creating an online, live-service game was “a lot harder than we thought“. The game was released on March 3, 2022, for PC, PS4, and PS5. It also had cross-platform support.
However, the response to the game was overwhelmingly negative. The critics called it “dead on arrival.” It was buggy and the issues pointed out during the beta release were not fixed.
The RPG was not as rewarding either, with many seemingly pointless and repetitive quests. Metacritic gave it a score of 46/100, PC Gamer 45/100 and IGN gave it 4/10.
The game failed to impress domestically with just 2,284 sold physical copies for PS4 and 2,224 for PS5 within its first week. The game struggled internationally as well, with an all-time high of just 1166 concurrent players on Steam.
That number fell to just one player in May of 2022. With the game struggling the studio was faced with the decision to either continue paying for the server costs for a game no one plays or terminate the game’s service.
Today they announced that they were going to terminate the game’s service on February 28, 2023, which would mean the game will cease to exist 3 days before its 1st anniversary.
It is with deep regret that we are terminating the game's service on February 28, 2023.
