Story Highlights
- Certain video games have a special, more attention-grabbing game over screen as compared to others.
- Some of the best examples of the thought revolve around the Batman: Arkham games, and Metal Gear Solid.
- One of the most iconic game-over screens in gaming, perhaps, belongs to the Grand Theft Auto series.
No one likes getting their butt handed to them in video games, but no matter how hard you try, it’s bound to happen sometimes. And with titles like Dark Souls 3 or any of the other brilliant works of legendary Japanese developer FromSoftware, death is guaranteed. Now, how do most games present the good, ‘ol game-over screen? Typically, it’s nothing remarkable.
There’s a quick animated sequence letting you know that you’re not winning anymore, followed by a brief loading period that transitions the player back to playing the game.
But hold up. Are all titles like that? Certainly not.
Some games show noteworthy effort being put into their game-over screens, whether from a creative or a developmental aspect, and this article highlights that just, casting a lens on some of the best ways a game has notified you of your demise like there’s no tomorrow. With no further ado, let’s dive right in.
I Really Can’t Take The Insult Anymore From These Games
Oh, and if you think another game deserves to be on here, make sure to post a comment down below and spark a discussion.
1. Metal Gear Solid
Being one of the most iconic games in the business that you should really revisit from time to time, Metal Gear Solid has a legendary game over screen that has evidently cemented itself in the minds of everyone who played it. The scream of Colonel Roy Campbell echoing through the codec radio is something I won’t be forgetting anytime soon. It genuinely hits you different when you’re playing the game with full focus.
2. Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time
Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia franchise peaked hard with the arrival of The Sands of Time, which is undoubtedly one of the greatest action-adventures ever. Although a remake of the 2003-released classic is in the works, the original experience with its creative loading screen will always retain its presence.
Since the premise of the game works by the Prince telling a story, the words he utters during the game-over screen after you die are, “No, no. That’s not how it happened.” Pretty quirky if you ask me.
3. Batman: Arkham Knight
Next up, and this entry is particularly home to some of the best game-over screens in the business, Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham franchise is well-known on multiple levels. Apart from arguably being the best superhero game series, Batman: Arkham games offer a unique twist when it comes down to their game-over screens.
Evidently, whenever you fall at the hands of your enemy, that particular foe, or the “boss” of that foe who employed his goons to take care of you, appears on screen and roasts the living heck out of Batman. I mean, if that doesn’t push you to get better at the game, I don’t know what type of motivation will, because game-over sequences in the Batman: Arkham games are plain ruthless.
4. Katamari Damacy
Talk about a scolding session with your dad gone even worse. Katamari Damacy is one of the best turn-your-brain-off games in the business, with little to no brain power required to play it, but when things boil down to failing the mission, things take an ugly turn. The King of All Cosmos, who also happens to be your father, calls you a disappointment in multiple ways. And that’s not even the worst part. The following is,
This is not your fault, buts Ours for believing in you,” rubs The King of All Cosmos in your face when you do not complete a mission objective.
It’s certainly something, and highly deserving of a spot on this list.
5. GTA 5
If you’re even remotely associated with gaming, the Grand Theft Auto franchise, otherwise written as GTA simply, must ring a bell. After all, the mega-popular action-adventure open-world game sports a legendary game-over screen with the “Wasted” text, going on to inspire so many real-life products, memes, and media of other sorts.
You definitely might have come across this a couple of times before, haven’t you? These days, however, all eyes are on GTA 6, the next major iteration in the series, as Rockstar plans a 2025 release for the game. We’re so in wait for another trailer of the game, considering the first one has topped 200 million views on YouTube, breaking all past records for a video game trailer.
6. The Dark Souls Series
I’ve faced this screen right there more times than I’ll actually admit, and having played through all Dark Souls games ever made by FromSoftware, chances are you’re in the same boat as me. Unequivocally, this “You Died” game-over screen is legendary, posing a straightforward, cold stance as the impression of you not being good enough settles in, perhaps for the 50th time in the day.
