Story Highlights
- Certain video games sport a more demanding storyline as compared to their counterparts.
- Games such as Subnautica, SOMA, Fear & Hunger, and more have to be played with attention.
- Dead by Daylight is another survival title with a fair bit of backstory behind it.
The video games industry has seen the rise of an absurd number of titles throughout time, but if you’re like me, you take pride in your extended preference for games with impressive lores. In my opinion, an interesting plotline and an even better premise for it make the gameplay so much better as opposed to a title that just has good gameplay.
That’s why I decided to put together this list of games with the most interesting lores out there in the business right now, so you know what you’re going to be playing next. Make sure to sift through each listing diligently for the best results, and while you’re at it, check out this separate piece that talks about sleeper titles that pack a hefty background despite not looking like much initially.
You Might Not Want To Sleep On These Games
Don’t hesitate to post a comment below in case you have a suggestion to make to the list.
1. Dead By Daylight
Player vs Player (PvP) games usually don’t amount much to the story, but that does not flow for Dead by Daylight—a popular multiplayer-focused horror game that seems subpar on paper when it comes to the story. However, what’s actually going down is Dead by Daylight’s “entity” wiping the minds of the Survivors before every run, so their fear remains fresh, and they do not know what’s going on exactly.
Here’s an explainer on YouTube that you should watch and acquire a little bit of understanding of what the title is about.
2. Elden Ring
Elden Ring’s name needs no introduction in the modern-day gaming world, having won 2022’s Game of the Year award, and not without good reason. But one of the facets of the game that goes easily overlooked — because many players typically don’t bother with it — is its lore. FromSoftware’s ethereal way of telling the story of its games requires work and patience, with the player having to connect the dots all by themselves to make sense of what’s happening.
To get you started, here are 10 interesting Elden Ring lore facts that should entice you to dig into the action-adventure RPG further.
3. Fear & Hunger
A game as disturbing as Fear & Hunger is something that people usually dodge, but those who gather the courage to play it will find that the horror title has impressive lore. The title is super unsettling, and will probably rattle you from the inside out, but you know what? The experience is worth it.
My colleague Ahmed Mansoor wrote a separate piece on the game that you can check out. At one point, he remarks,
The game utilizes the RPG trope where, you’re not the hero of your story, instead, you are the victim. Sometimes, something as minuscule as a rusty nail can end your run. In other moments you can find yourself starving to death or going insane from the stresses in the dungeon.”
4. Destiny 2
One of the most popular free-to-play shooters of all time, Destiny 2 does not pull any punches when it comes to the lore. As a matter of fact, this shooter’s background goes way, way deeper than what one would normally assume to be. As such, there’s a reason why people have made a 10-hour-long explainer video of the franchise’s story. It’s interesting as heck and very well worth the watch if you’re a fan.
eXputer rated Destiny 2: The Final Shape, which is its latest expansion, 4/5 in its review, with author Usama Mehmood remarking,
Destiny 2: The Final Shape is the greatest DLC Bungie has ever put out, rivaling the stupendous quality of both The Taken King and Forsaken.”
5. SOMA
Releasing all the way back in 2015, SOMA comes from the creators of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, one of the most legendary titles of all time that kickstarted the careers of famous YouTubers, such as PewDiePie. SOMA is an exceptionally terrifying game that has elements of horror that you probably haven’t experienced elsewhere, coupled with a tantalizing atmosphere, but here’s another feature that it sports: The game has fantastic lore.
The story and the scares are well-designed, and you won’t find yourself saying at any point that SOMA is not up to par. It can be a bit too frightening at times, yes, so do trek with caution.
6. Subnautica
Subautica is a personal favorite at this point, thanks to its riveting gameplay, beautiful visuals, and, of course, a deep lore that really demands the player to dig in, instead of ignoring it and playing on a superficial level. Subnautica also happens to be one of those games that don’t seem much lore-wise at the start, but pack a heavy punch in that regard if you do start looking.
It’s a life-changing game, to be fair, that is also known to have helped people come out of depression, so yeah. You might not want to skip out on this one.
