Story Highlights
- There is a diversity of video games out there that are well-made in all aspects but their ending.
- Some titles, on the other hand, have their conclusions designed so superbly that it’s flat-out incredible.
- Games such as Titanfall 2, Outer Wilds, and Portal 2 comprise near-perfect story resolutions.
We all love gameplay and graphics, and sometimes one more than the other in our favorite video games, but I feel storylines and the overall plot of a certain title don’t get much attention paid to them at times. I recently went through Soma, a psychological horror brought forth by the creators of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and goodness gracious, what a game!
That title has gotten me to put together some of the best games out there that nail the ending, the story aspect, and the culmination sequence that puts all of your learned skills to the test, thereby offering the perfect resolution to the plot that they targeted to present right from the get-go.
So set some budget aside, and spend on the forthcoming games instead before you opt for that slice of pizza you were about to get in case you’re yet to try these titles out for the first time.
These Games Are A Hefty Treat To Finish, No Questions Asked
Before we get started, it bears mentioning that the games ahead reflect only a personal opinion, and aren’t objectively accurate in what they are claimed to be. That said, I am confident that the vast majority of the readers won’t find themselves disagreeing with this list, though since it’s a free world, feel free to spark a discussion in the comments ahead.
Oh, and I won’t be getting too deep into each game’s story—I’m not the one to spoil a good moment. That said, expect some hints about the plot here and there.
1. Titanfall 2
At first glance, Titanfall 2 may seem like a simpleton shooter, but make no mistake, even though this game came out all the way back in 2016, it still manages to hold its ground phenomenally in 2024 all the same. I coursed through its hybrid campaign that mixes multiplayer elements as well and always found myself heartbroken near the end of the campaign. Three words: Protect the Pilot.
- Just so you know, Titanfall 2 is currently going for less than $5 right now on Steam, which is, well, dirt cheap considering the quality of the title.
2. Red Dead Redemption 2
Although some may find Red Dead Redemption 2 a tad too monotonous — and that’s perfectly understandable — there’s no question about the open-world action-adventure’s masterful storytelling and the way it intertwines its numerous plot points. The story of the game is rock-solid and has to be experienced by every player at least once—that’s what I’ll tell you.
3. Outer Wilds
A game like Outer Wilds only comes once across a decade or so, and the proof is in the pudding. It’s a simple game at its core that grows on you on the basis of knowledge, and by the time you reach the end, you get to put all of your acquired abilities to the test, making the entire conclusion look nothing but grandiose.
It’s the best $12 I’ve spent in recent times, I’ll vouch for that.
4. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Yeah, don’t get me wrong taking this one into account on a surface level, because the reason I put Sekiro on here, which by the way is the most badass game FromSoftware ever made, is how it brings forth the culmination of all that you’ve learned in the title in its epilogue. Going up against Isshin, the (mighty) Sword Saint is no joke, but remember: Hesitation is defeat.
5. Soma
Back when the creators of the Amnesia franchise revealed Soma, fan interest boomed, of course, but nothing could’ve prepared for us what was truly approaching with this intense sci-fi horror. Soma, in all fairness and without a modicum of bias, has one of the most compelling and brilliantly written plots in gaming, with fundamental-level gameplay that complements its theme well and fittingly.
There’s also insane potential for Soma to be turned into a movie, provided that the general public will be able to stomach its ending, that is. As one review on Steam says it, “Came for a good scare, left doubting my own existence.”
Don’t take me for my word; spend 10 bucks and try it for yourself.
6. Ghost Of Tsushima
Ghosts of Tsushima’s entire story is something to die for, but those who follow the inscribed pathway that leads Jin Sakai to become the savior of his land will witness an amazingly satisfying ending as the protagonist faces someone of great importance. Although vague — I admit — that’s the most spoiler-free way of discussing the title’s plot, but seriously, choose the way of the Ghost at the end and you’ll see what I’m on about here.
7. Portal 2
You must be living under a rock in case you happened to miss out on the marvel that is Portal 2. Hailing from a time when Valve was focused on pushing out different video game IPs as well, the way that this one culminates is a gift for gaming. Creative puzzles, great humor, satisfying gameplay, and worth playing even in 2024—need I say more?
