Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Canceled War Mode Footage Has Leaked Online

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 stands among the most popular COD titles of all time, but not for all the good reasons. It had a lot of in-dev content that never made it into the final game. Now, the Twitter user @mysticaIfrog has shared some of the cut content that showcases gameplay footage from the canceled War mode. The video clarifies that the War mode was also planned for Black Ops 4 at one point after its success in the prior release.

The footage contains a lot of elements from Black Ops 3; Yuno explains it happened because the development often starts with foundations from the previous project. Nevertheless, it is unclear why the developer Treyarch canceled the War mode, especially when it was so far into development. The Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Fandom page shows that many maps were already prepared for it before the mode was annulled.

Yuno shared the Call of Duty: Black Ops footage because another Twitter user recently came forward with gameplay from a canceled futuristic COD title. The Neversoft team was allegedly behind this project back in 2010 —dubbed “NX1”— before it was also canned behind the scenes. Call of Duty: Ghosts was instead released in its place three years later.

We suggest taking the footage with a grain of salt. However, this is certainly not the first time the canceled content for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 has spilled online via plausible sources. Details from the game’s canned campaign mode appeared over a year ago, showcasing unseen cutscenes and animations. It reinvigorated the gamers’ interest in the project and caused many to wonder just how much was scrapped over its development.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 has seen a plethora of criticism ever since particulars about it were revealed to the public. The integration of allegedly predatory microtransactions and a lack of campaign mode were the biggest points of contention. Additionally, the fans were disappointed after eventually learning about all the ambitions shrouding it that were never realized.

Despite all that, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 received a generally favorable reception on October 12, 2018, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. It was appreciated for an addictive multiplayer gameplay loop seen in other successful entries in the series, causing it to become the year’s best-selling title. Despite becoming Activision’s top-selling digital launch at the time with remarkable sales, the FPS failed to meet the publisher’s expectations.
