Modern Warfare 3 Xbox Disc Apparently Installs MWII Without Internet

A lot of content needs to be downloaded before getting to play the new MWIII.

Story Highlights

  • The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Xbox disc installs Modern Warfare 2 if there is no internet, as reported.
  • Installing MWII required over 12.4 GB of data, and the files for MWIII were uploaded as add-ons.
  • MWIII needed to be updated after going online, which took an extra 168 GB of data to become playable.

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Xbox disc can apparently install the previous MWII release if there is no internet available. Twitter user @Viovoxal reports his bizarre experience, iterating that the MWIII Xbox disc was able to install 12.4 GB of Modern Warfare 2 data to the console. It was seemingly listed with five 10 MB content packs. However, trying to launch MWII results in an error that requires the user to download a massive update.

As highlighted by Vinny, data requiring nearly 168 GB was needed for an update to completely ready Modern Warfare 3 and play it successfully. The different steps required to access the games through discs can become quite cumbersome, especially for those with a bad internet connection.

The disc installing MWII suggests that the devs may have used some shortcuts to save production costs. The discs these days do not contain the actual data, rather only license keys. So, the last MW game released on the disc could have been shown to the user since there was no internet to access the latest one. A week ago, one MWIII error was even asking users for the MWII 2 disc to start in the first place, but it was fixed soon by the devs.

The game has also been the target of a lot of disdain from the fans because of its short campaign. It is minuscule compared to the past entries and only lasts 3-4 hours. The studio has shared no reason behind the short length of the campaign. Recent rumors have suggested that Modern Warfare 3 was only developed in a total of 16 months. But Sledgehammer Games was quick to shut down the hearsays, claiming them to be false.

Both veterans and newcomers alike have been flooding the Modern Warfare 3 servers in droves ever since it came out. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 came out to mixed reception on November 10, 2023, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, and PC. The entry has been dubbed to feel like an extension over a full-fledged AAA title but has been priced at the standard premium price tag. MWIII further seems to indicate that the olden days of the franchise are over, as it is no longer what it was in the past.
