Story Highlights
- Gearbox Software is currently working on a new Borderlands game that may come out next year.
- Earlier, a cancer patient and longtime Borderlands fan asked if there’s a way to play Borderlands 4 early.
- Gearbox took notice, and granted his wish, giving him an experience he’ll remember for the days to come.
You love to see it. Over a month ago, cancer patient Caleb McAlpine took to Reddit, sharing his story and asking if there’s a way to play Borderlands 4 early because he might not be around until the game actually comes out.
The Borderlands community, coming together in what is one of the most wholesome manners I’ve seen, raised its voice, grabbing the attention of someone over at Gearbox Software. Popular Borderlands content creator k6plays also reached out to his contact(s) at the company and immensely helped to spread the word.
The result? Randy Pitchford, Gearbox’s CEO, got in touch with Caleb and promised him to do “the best we can” and now, it seems dreams really do come true. The 37-year-old, in a new post on the same subreddit, confirmed, that the developer was able to fly him and a friend first class to Texas where Gearbox is headquartered, giving him the experience of a lifetime.
Just an update, Thank you everyone

It probably goes without saying that Caleb cannot share in video format what Borderlands 4 looks like at the moment, but he has given away what matters the most right now. Gearbox took care of the man well, showing that it’s genuinely a class act. Kudos to the company for this incredible display of wholesomeness, but it bears mentioning that the Borderlands community has to be credited as well for putting Caleb’s case out there.
We got to play what they have for Borderlands 4 so far and it was amazing. I don’t know if I will be around when the game comes out but I just want to say thank you to all of you for all of your love and support and for helping in making this happen. It truly was an amazing experience and it was just awesome,” described Caleb in his recent Reddit post.
Borderlands 4’s Release Window Is Currently Indefinite
Tracing its initial reveal back to this year’s Gamescom, Borderlands 4 was only announced about three months ago and currently does not have a release window. We speculate it to release sometime in the next two years, but Gearbox is yet to comment on the subject.
