Capcom Really Wants To Make Another Marvel Vs. Capcom Game

Shuhei Matsumoto speaks for the team when he expresses his desire.

Story Highlights

  • Marvel vs. Capcom is an iconic fighting video game franchise featuring a crossover between two huge universes.
  • There hasn’t been a new Marvel vs Capcom game in a long while, but a collection comprising older ones is coming.
  • The producer of the upcoming compilation, Shuhei Matsumoto, speaks positively about the series’ future.

If there’s any fighting video game franchise right up there with the top dogs, it’s certainly Marvel vs. Capcom. The series spanning 8 different mainline iterations is about to get a solid nostalgia trip sometime later this year in the name of Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, but before its release, the producer of the compilation has had a few words to share about the future of the series.

Speaking to Dexerto in an interview, Shuhei Matsumoto, who is the producer of the forthcoming classics compilation, affirmed Capcom’s focus on the franchise, affirming that this set of particular games is pretty much “loved” over at the company.

What we can at least do now is to show that, hey, these series exist. We love these games. We hope that you do too, and maybe in the future, if people get to familiarize themselves with these series, then there may be future opportunities to make bigger games.”

When confronted about a new iteration in the Marvel vs. Capcom series, though, Shuhei prefaced the answer by saying, “The development team at Capcom has big dreams” and that “maybe there is an opportunity for a new Marvel vs Capcom game” or “there is an opportunity for a new Capcom-based SNK game.”

However, a lot of that rides on how the classics are received when they launch later this year. Matsuomo says,

But, if that were to happen, that would take some time and effort in order create and release those kinds of games, but the short-term with what we can do now is at least reintroduce these past legacy games to a new audience, to people who may not have the opportunity to play it, because it might not be out on modern or current platforms.”

Capcom’s worked up a wonder with the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, including some of the best retro fighting games from back in the day, and compiling them all under one roof. Here’s a list of all the titles part of the Arcade Classics collection,

  • X-Men Children of the Atom
  • Marvel Super Heroes
  • X-Men Vs. Street Fighter
  • Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter
  • Marvel Vs. Capcom Clash of Super Heroes
  • Marvel Vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes
  • The Punisher
