DOOM Eternal Finally Gets Deathmatch in New Mod

Frag again like its 1999!

Story Highlights
  • Velser, a DOOM modder, has created a mod that lets players participate in Deathmatch multiplayer in Eternal.
  • The mod has two different modes, Standard and Classic.

Deathmatch has consistently been one of the most asked-for modes for DOOM Eternal. While Battle Mode is great for what it offers, many have felt that DOOM Eternal has needed Deathmatch since its launch.

And it seems that players finally have what they’ve wished for. Created by Velser, a creator responsible for numerous DOOM Eternal mods such as the now-canceled Invasion Mode as well as a co-op mode. Deathmatch lets players do exactly that in DOOM Eternal.

The mod’s official description on Nexus reads,

Engage in Slayer vs Slayer combat within BATTLEMODE & CAMPAIGN maps. The playable Archvile is replaced with a Slayer on the demon team. The playable Pain Elemental is a passive spectator. Requires an active Internet connection to Bethesda servers.

While it’s nowhere near as stable as an official release, it’s a great alternative for players who have been dying to jump in against other players with the incredible arsenal of DOOM Eternal.

The mod works by having one player be the spectator as one of the demons who serves as a host. While the other two players pick the Slayer and duke it out on the battlefield. Players won’t be able to keep playing if the host leaves the match.

The mod itself offers two different modes. Standard and Classic. Standard mode has the player hunting the fodder demons for resources such as ammo, health, and ammo, while Classic Mode works as you’d expect from a classic arena shooter like Quake or Unreal Tournament. The demons are instead replaced by ammo, health, and armor pickups around the map.

Many players associate the DOOM games with Deathmatch, as the original DOOM was the progenitor of deathmatch multiplayer in 1996. Even the multiplayer of DOOM 2016 included classic Deathmatch multiplayer.

Deathmatch has also been experiencing somewhat of a resurgence lately with the sudden revival of Quake Champions and the frequent demand from players for more technical, high-skill online shooters.

Since its launch, DOOM Eternal has slowly cultivated an immensely passionate community of modders. Many of them have not only added their own game modes but also a ton of new improvements and quality-of-life features missing from the original game.

DOOM Eternal itself is already considered to be one of the most influential FPS titles of all time.  Only a few years after its release, the game has had its influence on many popular FPS games, such as Shadow Warrior 3, ULTRAKILL, Deadlink, and many more.
