Story Highlights
- Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a brand-new action RPG by iconic developer BioWare.
- The developer studio confirms that the game will receive no added DLC over the course of its release.
- BioWare instead wants to focus on the development of Mass Effect 5, the next iteration in the Mass Effect series.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the next big thing in the RPG space, coming out in recent times for modern-day platforms, and enjoying great fan-fare on launch. It’s not what hardcore franchise fans wanted for the next Dragon Age game, but as far as resetting the series is concerned, The Veilguard seems to be doing a satisfactory job.
However, if you expect more Dragon Age content coming out anytime soon, don’t. BioWare is shifting its focus to another project that has been lingering in the backlog for quite a while now —Mass Effect 5. While speaking to Rolling Stone in a new interview, The Veilguard’s Creative Director John Epler has confirmed this, saying that BioWare has learned some hard-earned lessons from its former ventures.
On the flip side, BioWare might play around with the idea of adding multiplayer to The Veilguard, taking the example of Final Fantasy 16 and how that RPG masterfully incorporates this element in gameplay.
It’s possible to tell a strong story in a multiplayer game. Final Fantasy XIV does an excellent job. Multiplayer also introduces some complications around world states. I make a giant choice in my world, and the world changes. It’s funny, because the games I play the most on my personal time are actually multiplayer games. But when it comes to crafting these worlds and crafting the experiences, I love the focus that single-player can give you,” says Epler.
Fans Spell Concern Over The Future Of The Mass Effect Franchise
Dragon Age: The Veilguard, when gauged from a lens that does not take into account the legacy of the Dragon Age franchise, is more than passable. It’s filled to the brim with content; the visuals are great, and the storyline is interesting, but the lack of ample roleplay options followed by weak combat is really pulling this title’s image down. For the majority of the RPG’s fan base, the consensus is in negative.

If BioWare could somehow impart valuable lessons from The Veilguard’s reception and let all of that bleed into the development of Mass Effect 5, I think we’ll be okay. Then again, that is a big if.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard was launched on October 31, 2024, for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
